Online/phone psychologist

Online/phone psychologist

Hi everyone,

I am having my mental health plan done next week, and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on online or telehealth type psychology eg MeHelp Psychology.

I have trouble getting appointments in my are especially those that are bulk billed. My employer is happy to allow me time through the day to attend but I thought phone type counselling would be more logistically easier.

Just seeking opinion or experiences on what others have had. TIA

Re: Online/phone psychologist

Hey @jrn I haven't used specific online psychology services through a fully online psychology clinic, but I do see my counsellor completely online and it has been great for me. It's much more flexible and it's nice to be in the comfort of my own home.

It will be interesting to hear other's opinions but I'm sure that like with in-person psychologists, some will be a better fit than others, so it can be good to look around and try to find an online clinic or a practitioner that speaks to you and your needs, but also know that the first one might not be the perfect fit but you're not locked in and you can always use your remaining MHCP sessions with another practitioner at a different clinic

Thanks for the advice, I didn't realise you were locked in. I really wish I knew that with my very first MHCP as I didn't quite connect with the psychologist

hi @jrn

i do a lot of relehealth and find its been very helpful some days i would miss appoimntments just through anxiety and some platforms are biy harder to join rooms 1e zoom easier than teams i found.

also access psych who i used have got me help when ive been distressed outside appts with other clinicians if my regular wasnt availavle and have nedicare option if something blew up with the cover i had.

im not a technical person and only learned write emails this year in my fifties so not overly difficult process

Thanks for the advice. I have seen alot of ads via the socials, and there alot of varying comments, so hearing from people that have actually used a service really helps

You can try BetterHelp. They are a phone subscription service and you can choose to do Video Calls or just weekly phone sessions. The hours they offer is odd though, and I didn't last long with it because I didn't want to video call when the psychologist did.

Hey @jrn ,

I think @Ru-bee mentioned that you are NOT locked in? I'm not sure if there was a misunderstanding there.

I have my own psychologist via telehealth. It took some time getting used to, but it was the most convenient as I was working and couldn't travel to see him face to face.

Did you say you were looking for only bulk billed? At the moment, I don't know any bulk billed psychologists.

I hoep you find some thing that suits what you are looking for. I also look forward to hearing others' experiences.

Re: Online/phone psychologist

@tyme I have found a couple of bb ones that do the telehealth thing, but am a bit sceptical, due to so many services just trying to make a quick $ these day

Re: Online/phone psychologist

I totally agree @jrn . No wonder you are seeking people's experiences.

I don't know if I've asked this before, but if you are working, do you have access to EAP?

I've found EAP helpful. It doesn't have to be about work.

Re: Online/phone psychologist

@tyme Thanks for mentioning that I talk to a counsellor every few weeks through my EAP. I am one of the fortunate ones that have an employer that is very proactive with mental health

In WA you can contact Peer Pathways https://www.peerpathways.org.au or phone 1300 555 788.

They have Peer Navigators that can help you find bulk billed psychologists. When I attended the WAPSN conference Peer Pathways had a whole page of practitioners who bulk billed their services. You may be able to find one that offers telehealth.
