Why am I here

Why am I here

I have been thinking about my goals and values on my path to recovery and this website and CHIME and what I wanted to achieve by joining sane forums and recovery club and posting and what I need from the community here and how to ask for help.

I guess tonight it is also because I can’t sleep again and can’t switch off my thinking to go back to sleep. It is also because of connection and rejoining society after hiding out in my home and my bed regularly since 2022 on depressed days as a coping strategy. It is also about processing what happened and what I learned about my time in psychosis, mania, depression and self care and perhaps sharing my story. It is about identity and what to do when you lose it. When I stopped work due to mental illness I lost a lot. I lost my identity. I lost the sense of self worth my job gave me. I lost an income. I lost a sense of having a place in society. I could not imagine a future. It is also about shame and guilt about my actions when I was delusional and psychotic and processing my experience of psychosis and moving on with life and making sense of what happened during the psychosis and integrating it as a story. It is about not asking for help and not knowing what I needed when I was unwell. It is about not recognising the symptoms of psychosis in myself and my family not recognising it or how unwell I was or being able to help. It is about taking responsibility for my actions and my life. It is about empowerment. It is about stigma. It isn’t about hope tonight. I got hope back a year ago and started to contemplate my future and what life might look like in the future and how it needs to be different. It is about community. I can’t remember what M stands for. It is about feeling let down by the medical system and inequality in healthcare. Now I’m just rambling.

M is for Meaning. Why am I here?

I do wonder about this. What is the point of life really? Or what is the point of my life. What is my purpose? What gives life meaning? Why are any of us here? Why is meaning important? What do we need meaning for? Maybe this is why I stay in bed all day and do nothing. I achieve nothing. Life means nothing to me. My life has no meaning. I have no goals. I can’t think of anything I want to do. There is no joy on those days. I just lie there. Everything is too hard to do. Why bother getting up out of bed. Why don’t I want to get up or wake up in the morning on those days. Why do I just want to sleep all the time. Why am I tired when all I do is sleep?

Hi @simple-petal I'm glad that you had this space to put down your thoughts and consider your goals and how they relate to the CHIME framework - what a good idea to explore this here. It sounds like each of these 5 points work as good prompts for you to reflect on where you've been, where you are now, and where you want to go next.

Thank you for sharing this here, I hope that getting these thoughts down was helpful, and I hope that you were able to get a good rest afterwards

Re: Why am I here

Thanks for posting @simple-petal . What you say resonates with me.

I looked up CHIME.

I'd have trouble with all 5 facets at present. But it's food for thought.

Re: M is for Meaning. Why am I here?

hey @Simple_petal, im no stranger to the same thoughts and questions & by no means an expert obly speak of lived experiance personally not academic knowledge....

rumination is a brutal cycle and i found nearly impossible to stop once it begins.

understanding it and acknowledging it has helped me ground now at least before it consumes me.

on you tube theres a 42 min guided meditation by Michael Sealey called detachment from over thinking, please try that on a night your struggling to sleep as i have only a few times in many heard the end of it through sleep, i have had friebds also say it helped them and still does as with me.

meditation was a concept i rejected until i realised it was as easy as listening from the bed, lounge or floor i was already on and didnt require lessons and classess

not promising miracles but iy definetely helps having the tone and cadence he has on the nights when silence is too noisy to sleep.

Through DBT i have also learned when able to implement facing the facts it can create space for self compassion which i struggled to comprehend the worth of by the same thought process its now used to strip agency from.

i will look up CHIMES as i dont think im familiar with the acronym yet.....

hope your betterer

@Dimity @simple-petal wow thats a lot!

would of freaked me out if shown it at start of journey i believe it would of gone straight into the too hard basket exaserbating my fear of failure and thoughts of hopelessness

no criticism intended i hope to one day be confident in all of that

Re: Why am I here

Hey @simple-petal,

You've definitely highlighted a lot of parts of the CHIME framework here. What I really love about both the Forums and the groups that you'll do as part of RecoveryClub are that both spaces / supports really do help people to feel less alone. It's through connection with others (even in brief moments) where I have felt less like an alien. Hearing that other people are asking these questions and experiencing these things helps me to know that I'm not just innately broken, and that there is the possibility of something better. So definitely share your reflections, thoughts and experiences. You never know when you sharing will help someone else who is thinking exactly the same thing.

I've probably done more work on some of the five topics than others during my recovery (ongoing), but the work I have done has made me a bit more resilient when challenges continue to come up.

On a slightly different note; I'm a bit of a CHIME nerd. If anyone is interested in the original journal article about the CHIME framework, plus some others that I found interesting, I will link them below:

Wow your story sounds so much like mine. Some years ago, I spent two years in bed (18 hours per day). I have Bipolar Disorder and like you struggle with shame and feelings of humiliation because of things that I have said and done when I was unwell. I also used to isolate at home. I found that by getting a support worker, who would take me out and do things that I have slowly found the courage to be out of the house more and more. Now I love a trip to the shops! For Me C for connection means connecting with classmates at Tafe as well as connection with forums users here on SANE. H for hope, I hope for a brighter future. I for identity I really struggle with but would say that I am Aboriginal and I am a mother and friend. M for meaning, I am trying to make my life have meaning by learning to use my lived experience to help others. E for empowerment, I guess I feel empowered to be able to make changes in my life.

Thank you @REDLINEZ750 . I know of Michael Sealy on Youtube. I used to listen to him and also 'the honest guys' and 'Jason Stephenson'. I would get so relaxed I would fall asleep. I find that they have very calming voices.

The benefits of meditation are numerous and it is easy to do. There is a mindful meditation by Sarah Edelman that was suggested in a group I went to this year. It only takes 10 minutes so I think I could choose to commit to returning to regular practice meditating. I will put it on my to do list for tomorrow and make it a priority. After all it is only 10 minutes.

But I might be using Michael Sealy to fall asleep tonight. I am on day 2 of feeling great again after 14 days in the bed. The feeling great goes with poor sleep with me. I cant go too many days without sleep or I'll end up in hospital again.

@simple-petal hey glad you have had good few days!

i will have a look at sarah edelman tonight for sure, mindfulness is something i have learnt to always provide some calm when heads full of chaos since learning to practice it this year via DBT & i turn to it daily.

the honest guys rings a bell of familiarity if i remember right im subscribed must look into it as most of my you tube now is Gabor Mate and duary of ceo when not got music running. like now

i stumbled across Michael Sealey years ago, after constantly being told i overthink everything a search on overthinking took me there.

if i recall was in the 1-3am time and yip i was overthinking about overthinking and he has been a steady way to detach from it since.

i hope your able to get the sleep you need tonight
