BPD & Family Dog

BPD & Family Dog

My adult dwbpd is in the middle of a very bad episode atm and we might have to have our family dog put to sleep in the next few days (episode is not caused by the worry of the dog). She is extremly close to the dog, he is very old and has been her companion throughout her BPD journey. She's said if he dies she will. I'm finding it very hard trying to explain to her that we might have to put him to sleep as everytime she asks she brings up that she wants to be euthanised too - she sees it as the only way of escaping the pain of her illness. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi @AlbertV21 and welcome to the forums.

Its sounds like your whole family is going through an incredibly hard week. I'm very sorry to hear about your dog, it's a very hard call to make, and while your daughter is clearly the main concern currently, I just wanted to make a little space for the hurt that losing a pet brings.

Does your daughter have any current supports in place, such as a therapist? Perhaps it could help to have an emergency session to get through this, if possible.

I'm glad you've been able to reach out here and hope that you feel supported by the community

Thank you @Ru-bee for your kind words. Unfortunately her therapist is away for the next 6 weeks - hence the lengthy episode she is having

Hi @AlbertV21

I can relate to what you are sharing. I have BPD. The emotional pain is REAL. It can be unbearable to the point that "out" is a better option.

After reading your post, one thing I have to say is that if it comes to the point where your daughter is really not safe, it may be worth considering a short 1-2 day inpatient stay - not for any therapeutic work, but for a 'containment' during a situational crisis. If you don't feel she is safe, contact 000 or know you can take her to the emergency department. This is only if you feel she really can't keep herself, as it can also be a difficult experience if she goes against her will.

However, if you feel you can talk her through this, perhaps ask her what she feels will help her manage. These conversations should ideally be done when she is not heightened or upset because as a person with BPD, trying to talk and reason when heightened will only escalate things.

Thoughts?
