Need life advice

Need life advice

Hello,

I have an intriguing dilemma, and I would like to ask for advice from experienced adults.

First of all, here's a little bit about myself: I am only 18 and in my first year of university studying for a bachelor of computer science. I have been thinking about dropping out of university multiple times, as I have lost interest in studying my course. Throughout high school I have always had the best grades, and I was into the things I was studying. But recently I don't even have the motivation to take down some notes.

My mum works a full-time retail job, while my dad has been trying to start a clothing business for the last 5 years, and it keeps running into problems. My mum's and my older brother's accounting jobs are what run the household; therefore, we aren't in a great financial situation right now, and my dad's business is slowly driving us into debt. I myself have started my own business with a couple of mates. It hasn't made any money yet, but I think it's a good investment.

Running a business is not something new to me, as most of the family are and have come from successful businessmen, and so was my dad before he sold his businesses to migrate to Australia for our family, and with new technology and his poor English, he just can't keep up with the market like he used to. I also have never wanted to work a full-time job, and I don't see myself working a 9-5 in the future either.

Secondly, the reason I am asking random adults on the internet and not the adults I know in my life is because I feel as if in the last couple of years I have been manipulated into making decisions which are in the best interest of others and not me, like I have never gotten advice which didn't have a selfish drive behind it one way or another.

For example, in high school I was always good at maths and science, and I even enjoyed them. I was also slightly interested in coding, but I wasn't ever that skilled at it. I wanted to do engineering, yet my father convinced me to pursue a computing field, saying I didn't have it in me to do engineering. Now that I am doing computer science, he has been slowly forcing me to run the technical side of his business, almost like he wanted me to learn computer science just so I could help him out with his business.

However, I actually don't mind helping him with the business at all, but the thing is I have a lot on my plate. This whole year I haven't been able to achieve any of my goals, as I have been in constant stress from university assignments, working on my dad's business, working on my own business, helping out my mum with household chores, working at a part-time job for minimum pay, trying to work on my physical and personal goals and hanging out with friends.

I get stressed out from the fact that I have so much to do that I end up doing nothing.

I want to drop out, but I am afraid my migrant parents won't like that decision.

If I drop out, I know I can put my full attention into my dad's business and mine, and I am confident that I will succeed in doing so. I am not afraid of failing.

I have been relating to this quote a lot recently: "If you get on the wrong train, get off at the nearest station; the longer it takes you to get off, the more expensive the return trip will be."

So what do you think? Will I be making the wrong decision if I drop out?
I know I want to have career security if I do.
Do I take the risk, and do I tell my parents about it?
Please let me know your thoughts.
I would love to hear your genuine advice, even if it's harsh.

Thank you.

Re: Need life advice

i reckon @StuckInBetween that you should only drop out of your current course if you can replace it with a course you would like to pursue or if your newly started business can provide you with an income.

Why waste your good potential doing things others want you to do but your needs are not met? For i reckon you may well have lost interest in your studies because you are doing something that does not satisfy your inner needs. This should ALWAYS be a no, no, when it comes to life choices, as education and in particularly employment is.

It appears to me you are semi-depressed and need to fill up your soul with good things, so that zest for living resurfaces again. Your current home situation is not helping this along! However at 18 you are relative soon to break free from that as a natural process starting your own life leaving your parental home.

Maybe discuss this with your parents before making a final decision, but please do not let their needs negatively influence your life choices, such is not fair on you and could cause you to recent your parents later on in life suffering the consequences.

i hope you give this some serious thought.

Re: Need life advice

Hi @StuckInBetween

For an 18 year old you have lots on your plate. I can understand the want to please my parents and not disappoint them, but at the same time chase your own dreams. It seems like you are torn between the two.

It is a lot for any young person to know what they want to do for their future. It's ok not to know exactly what you want and to have lots of questions.

Have you ever thought of applying for a leave of absence from you University Course?

Not all courses allow it, but a lot do.

I would contact my Universities Student Administration. They will be able to guide you in the right direction. There will be procedures to follow and forms to fill out but they would be able to help.

You can also seek advice from your university's careers counsellor (or student advisor). They should be able to help too.

I am suggesting this as it might be a good choice. You are not dropping out which might help with your parents, but at the same time you can pay full attention to your own business and your Dad's. If you decide not to go back to your course, it might make it a little easier for your parents to accept.

Just a suggestion anyway.
