@StuF i did like the song a lot my friend. i had many of those issues my hurting life as well. However i learned to see that it is not what goes in, whatever way we do, or whatever we do, but the reason in our hearts that is the issue.
For example many of the substances, i had massive issues with in the past, i use now without any issues, and at will?
All because i change the relation i had with it?
Instead of let demand in my heart and mind rule what i enjoyed, more than my dignity and self respect, opened up the opportunity to learn to use for different reasons than i had or cease using it the way i had.
For example for years i was addicted for the alcohol, smoking tobacco, weed, coffee, and as strange as this may sound - the love of my wife. All to help me numb the pain i suffered and settle my anxious nerves a little. But heeding demand, must have, now do....., in my heart, instead of where i was using it, or her, for, made the very good thing in my life my destruction without and not much other benefit in the end.
So i still use alcohol freely now without the addictive sting
also nicotine, although i would never smoke nor vape it again patches work great tho when needed, not otherwise.
Weed as is beneficial not otherwise.
Coffee is wonderful stuff and to drink it without having to is a freedom that keeps the (morning) benefit as well the enjoyment having a cuppa.
Letting go of my need for my wife's love is opening me to relate to her without harming her or myself my inner (hot) demand her love must/ought/should be there for me when heeding that had killed the very love i craved.
Are not all loves gone wrong the same?
Therefore in my book heeding inner demand - is always kind of addictive in a bad way - and is tied up with our ego ruling self more than taking good care of ourself. For self love will always have an ear for need, try reduce suffering, and stay in control of reality lived with dignity care for all in self? So in my life at least, this meant learning not heed my inner demand(er), but where i hurt having done that. And not focus on what i consume or enjoy coming to me from the outside but what inside of me makes that an issues.👋

So changing my relation to these 'outsiders coming in' is keeping all of those things in my life, only the demander and the life in lies hurting that dead.
