@PeppyPatti I was a volunteer at the visitor centre from its inception for about 5 years. I was offered a full time job there but it paid less than Telstra so I declined. The benefits were amazing, I got to try practically every winery and restaurant in the valley, was flown over to Sydney to be at the Caravan and Camping Expo one year to represent WA and made some really good friends. I also did the Food and Wine expo at Burswood a few years in a row too.
I saw Paul Kelly for my birthday one year, it was at the Ozone bar in Northbridge. As a 17 year old my best friend and I loved Pseudo Echo. Despite being underage we went to every gig they had in Perth, found out the car they were being driven in (it was a green 80's Commodore lol!) and my best friend and I would draw lipstick love hearts on the windows, then wait for the band to come out. I remember one incident when we were standing by the car and Brian the lead singer said "not you girls again!" We laughed and got invited to the after party they were having at their hotel. Both my friend and I declined, knowing full well that our parents would have tanned our hides if we got home late! I have some awesome photos of the band because we always made sure we were in the front row.
I saw INXS at the Ent Cent (Entertainment Centre) when I was about 15, they were sponsored by 96FM and the tickets were $6.96. Their album The Swing had just come out and although I wasn't a huge fan Michael Hutchence was a great performer.
The only O/S bands I've seen are OMD, Melissa Etheridge and Billy Bragg. I've seen some Christian singers from O/S as well as my favourite band 4 King & Country (got to meet them and be photographed with them).
Wandering backstage and just hanging out must have been such a blast! And you'd do your tapestry? That is one of the most amazing things I think anyone could do backstage! How awesome!
Do you remember Todd Johnson from V Capri and also the radio? He was at the Breakwater in Sorrento early 90's and my flatmate and I would go there every Wednesday night - we'd either swap shifts to get the next day off or get the latest shift possible and she would drive. She smoked the whacky backy and I drank. Todd Johnson was standing by me as I was trying to leave the ladies and being short he looked down at me with a "do you KNOW who I am?" look. Drunkenly I said "I don't give a f*** who you are, get out of my way."
So that's my 20's in a nutshell really, studying at WAAPA and then working at Telecom as it was then. I always wished I'd stuck with my studies at the Academy but hindsight is always 20/20.
