I’m a a complete loss

I’m a a complete loss

My 23yo daughter is suicidal and self harming. She had a week in a psychiatric hospital and then they discharged without much ongoing help (waitlists to get a regular psychiatrist and to get into any day programs). She is depressed and potentially bipolar.
And I am out of ideas how to help her. This has been going on for 10 years and I’m so tired of it all. I honestly wish I could give up, but my family need me. I’m so so tired.

Hello @Mater 👋 and welcome to the forums.

It makes sense you're feeling tired and out of ideas after 10 years of trying to help your daughter with her mental health. It sounds like this might also be impacting your own mental wellbeing where you share wishing you could give up? It's good to hear that despite these thoughts, your family is what keeps you going 🌿.

I'm very glad that you have found this forum and that you've felt able to post and I do hope that you will feel the support of the community during this time.

I did also just want to share the contact details for Kids Helpline, which your daughter can contact for support anytime. Their number is 1800 55 1800 | Web Chat - and they are open 24/7! You may also find it helpful to contact a Parentline service. I hope this helps 🦋

HI @Mater, you can access free assistance, via remote therapy or someone now for psychotherapy . Please google them both and see if this will help you and your Daughter x

Hi @Mater

Welcome to the forums. I am so sorry that you have been dealing with your daughter's mental health for 10 years and feel as though you are not really getting anywhere. Unfortunately, the system is a bit hard to use at the best of times. Once you build a good support network though it can really help. I am a client at a community adult mental health clinic and have had various experiences there but now I am pretty happy with my team. I did just lose my psychiatrist and am waiting for them to employ someone new, which I am a bit anxious about. My old psychiatrist was really good. I have bipolar and am happy to chat if that helps.

This may not be useful for you being two months later, but has she considered a diagnosis for BPD? self harming is a classic sign of BPD. Spectrum victoria are the leading support organisation for people in Victoria who need help. she would need a referral from her area mental health team to access their help. otherwise try to get an assessment from a psychologist or psychiatrist for an assessment first
