Feeling gutted, overwhelmed and defeated

Feeling gutted, overwhelmed and defeated

Just had an upsetting conversation with my partner, feeling upset and alone and just want to talk.

My partner was initially frustrated because I apparently don't want to do anything anymore. There's probably a fair bit of truth to that, find it really hard being outside the house for a number of reasons. He was also frustrated because I tend to not want to do things because of the cost. The main reason I worry about the cost of things is because I'm always broke because of how much I have to spend on doctors appts and medication just for mental health. Then he got really upset and said I was just wasting all my money on this medical crap, it doesn't even work anyway and I haven't even tried to find bulk billing services and its all just a waste of time. We've only been together for coming up a year and I've been trying to deal with this stuff for well over 15 years. I've made so much effort to find bulk billing or cheaper services but I just can't get access to it.

One of the main reasons I'm trying so hard to access mental health support and make some progress is because I want to be a better partner. I try really hard to shield him from all the crap that storms on within but there's some stuff I just can't mask. There's real barriers to intimacy and I do struggle to just get on and enjoy outside the house activities, for example.

He's not a bad person and probably has to deal with more than I realise. Maybe it's coming from a place of frustration that's been brewing for a while. I just feel really rotten right now.

I hate myself for not being normal and not being able to just get up and enjoy life.

I hate myself for not being able to be intimate.

I hate myself for going through this for so long and not making any good progress.

I hate myself for being high maintenance, even when I make every effort to make it as easy as I can on those around me.

I hate myself for not being able to get a handle on this.

I'm terrified this will just be another relationship that's going to break down because I'm such a screw up.

I'm so embarrassed that I can't just live life like a normal personal.

I feel so alone and isolated that I can't seem to be understood by anyone around me.

I feel doubtful that there's a good medical reason why I'm like this and I'm just a complete loser and a failure.

I feel shocked that this has even come up at all. We've never really been able to communicate openly about all this stuff but I've always assumed he's been silently supportive. Now I just don't know where I stand.

I feel like I have nothing to offer and I'm just holding him back from the life he wants to live.

I try my hardest to do stuff he wants to do, but can probably only manage to say yes about 50% of the time. But it's just not enough.

He still seems so mad at me right now and I just don't know what I'm supposed to do. I've had so many relationships break down over my life. It just feels like the same shitty thing is going to happen all over again because for whatever reason I just suck and can't get on with it like everyone else.

Re: Feeling gutted, overwhelmed and defeated

I can feel the pain in your words, and I want to gently offer a different perspective on what's happening here. You mentioned this relationship is coming up to a year, but you've been in relationship with yourself for 15+ years of struggling. That relationship with yourself - the one that's been carrying you through all of this - deserves your attention and compassion first.

When Self-Attack Becomes the Norm - What I notice in your post is how quickly you turned all that hurt and frustration inward. Every sentence beginning with "I hate myself for..." is your nervous system doing what it's learned to do - attack yourself before anyone else can. This isn't your fault; it's a survival pattern that developed to try to keep you safe from rejection.

But here's what your nervous system doesn't realise: you cannot hate yourself into being lovable.

You mentioned trying so hard to be a better partner, to shield him from your struggles, to manage only saying yes 50% of the time but feeling like it's not enough. But here's what I'm not hearing - any mention of you being kind to yourself, accepting where you are, or recognising your incredible strength.

You've been surviving and fighting for your well being for 15+ years. That's not failure - that's heroic persistence.

One Year vs. A Lifetime -
Your partner has known you for less than a year. You've been in relationship with yourself through 15+ years of struggle, growth, setbacks, and small victories. Which relationship deserves more of your energy and attention right now?

When someone dismisses your mental health care as "medical crap," they're dismissing your commitment to healing. They're dismissing 15 years of you refusing to give up on yourself.

The Truth About Deep Connection - You can't give someone access to a heart that you're constantly attacking. You can't create genuine intimacy when you're in a relationship with someone who doesn't understand or respect your healing process.

Real intimacy requires you to be in loving relationship with yourself first. It requires a partner who sees your mental health care as an investment in your shared future, not a waste of money.

Your Nervous System Right Now - What you're experiencing - the shame spiral, the self-attack, the fear of abandonment - this is your nervous system in full protection mode. It's trying to figure out how to be "acceptable" enough to avoid rejection. But this isn't love; it's survival.

What if, instead of asking "How can I be better for him?" you asked "How can I be kinder to myself today?"

What if your 15+ years of fighting for your mental health isn't something to be ashamed of, but something to honour?

What if the right person for you would see your commitment to healing and think "This person values themselves enough to do the hard work - that's exactly who I want to build a life with"?

You're not high maintenance for needing mental health support. You're not broken for struggling with intimacy after trauma. You're not a failure for having limits around activities.

You're a human being doing the courageous work of healing, and that deserves respect - especially from yourself.

The relationship that needs your attention most right now is the one with yourself. When you can hold yourself with compassion, you'll naturally attract people who can do the same.

You've been fighting for yourself for 15 years. Please don't stop now...... @StillTrying

Thanks @ccau_82

That was an incredibly considered and well worded response. Thanks for your perspective and encouragement.

I don't know what else to say apart from you're right. I'm only just starting to realise how harsh and critical I can be towards myself. I'm not entirely sure how to tackle it, but recognising it is a good first step I hope.

Thanks again, that was a very insightful post.

Re: Feeling gutted, overwhelmed and defeated

Hello I identify with this story of poverty and endless struggle, and it all comes back to PARENTS.

I made a decision in my life a few years ago, that NOTHING was more important than my own survival, and finding genuine happiness in my life after 40 years of pain and misery.

It means that I can't put up with a single person who disagrees with my wierdness after I have been so traumatised, so underresourced, and so ripped off for such a long time.

So I had a lonely couple of years where I was rejecting every single person who did not connect genuinely. I was speed dating friends, being polite to them but if they weren't truly aligned to me without hesitation I said GOODBYE.

In my life I know what sadness is, I know what frustration is, I know what being abused is, and I know what wasting my time is. I do not know what it feels to be truly loved. If I buy a plant and bring it to my hosue, I love the plant and I want it to thrive under my loving care and attention. In the past I have treated my partners similarly, yet with every partner there is a point they give up caring for me and end up taking from me. That's the point when I give it a few sad months and realise once more I have been used for my affection and that nobody will ever love me, and we break up.

But, I have some wonderful friends who bring a lot of happiness to my life. They have had similar stories to mine, or we have similar interests in society. But every single one of those friends, knows that I am different to many because my life has been f%$^ed. So, they have a gentle compassion to me and they understand my rough edges, and I do the same for them.

Due to trauma I do not pursue intimate relationships with other people but, my friends bring so much delight to my life I have become a better person from their influence, and they are also influenced by me. I believe that you have to hold yourself as the most important thing in your own life, and that if other people don't treat you as important or they dont respond to what you need, if they dismiss your needs or deny compassion they don't have what it takes to be a close relationship person.

So I would have a deep think in your situation are you able to communicate what you truly need and dont need, and will that other person listen and respond? Or are they taking whats easy to take, and not giving back. I do not know, but a solid relationship should bring happiness and comfort, not tension and doubt.
