The Power of Your Breath
A Simple Reset for Your Nervous System
Hey everyone,
Wanted to share something that's been a game-changer for me and many others in our community - using breath as a tool to help regulate our nervous system.
Why This Matters for Us ~ after service, many of us carry patterns in our body that keep us in a state of hypervigilance. Our nervous system, which served us well in military environments, can get stuck in "high alert" mode even when we're safe at home. The good news? Your breath is one of the most accessible tools you have to signal safety to your system.
The Science Bit (Lets Keep it Simple) ~ when we breathe in, our heart rate naturally increases slightly. When we breathe out, it decreases. By extending our exhale longer than our inhale, we're essentially telling our nervous system "it's safe to downshift." This activates what's called the parasympathetic response - your body's rest and recovery mode.
A Simple Practice to Try: 4-6 Breathing
Here's a technique that's been incredibly effective for me:
- Inhale for 4 counts (through the nose)
- Exhale for 6 counts (out of the mouth)
- That's it. Simple but powerful.
Your Experience?
I'm curious about what works for you. Have you tried breathwork before? What techniques help you find that reset when your system feels wound up?
This isn't about "just breathe" - we've all heard that unhelpful advice. This is about understanding that we have real, practical tools to work with our nervous system rather than against it.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.
