New job, and I want to quit.

New job, and I want to quit.

Hi,

Im really struggling to stay at a new job, its part time (18.1 hrs) a week. At a university campus, working within remote allied health.

This is a first for me in many ways... my first office job in 7 years, first job out of the house in 5 years, and well just generally being surrounded with adults 8 hrs at a time has been a first in while whole life. And im 32.

Its been incredibly hard. Week 4.. I have 3 days off.. week 3 I have 1.5 work from home... and 1 day off.

Im not sure what to do. My previous at home job was my own clinical practice and im needing to keep that closed.

How do you get yourself a understanding job 🤔

Hey @Gab93

Sounds like a big step for you. Firstly; very proud and impressed that you've got yourself a job.

I have an allied health background too, and been involved in people returning to the workplace, so I'm kind of familiar with a situation like yours. It's absolutely challenging, so let's name that 🙃

Has your employer been not understanding so far? Have they said anything to you? Do they know anything about your lived experience?

I know it can sound kinda cliche and cheesy, but in my personal experience I always look for workplaces that value lived experience. That can be hard to find from the get-go, and I often ask about it during interviews.

I've also found it helpful to have an understanding of my own support needs and preferences, because this then helps me communicate them to my employer, come to the table with some strategies (and reasonable adjustments) that work for me and my brain, and advocate for myself ✌️

That sounds a big change @Gab93 - not unreasonable that it feels hard so far.

A lot of work places have a number of support and wellbeing options available, including EAP and Reasonable Workplace Adjustments - especially if they are government or co-funded organisations. I worked in a university abit over 10 years ago and the one I was at had provisions for staff.

Do you know what options are available at work?

Does your supervisor seem friendly and open to discussing how they can best support you during this transition into the new role?

Re: New job, and I want to quit.

Little update.

I found that the supports within the organisation were very contradicting. I was working alongside a GP practice, and my GP is within that network. She wrote a letter that outlined the accomodations I was needing. And it was declined sadly.

In the end I resigned, my mental health had deteriorated significantly. And I dont ever want to put my children in a position of seeing me not well, because of a job that doesn't fit my needs.

Its been hard on my relationship because that was exciting to potentially have a second income, but working through it.

Thankyou for your suggestions, im taking my time to find a job that fits me, instead of just working because its the social norm.

I am learning that the identity I built for 30 years was a survival strategy, a way to please others and now after a couple years of finding myself, falling back to the "working gal" persona was a shock to the system.

There is still allot of shame, discomfort and self doubt. But I am working through it all.
