I need help

I need help

I don’t even know where to begin.

I have 17yo and 19yo daughters living at home with me.
I am a single parent.
their father is around but unhelpful on many levels.

My 17yo urgently needs mental health help in the form of a psychologist or psychiatrist but we keep hitting brick walls.
She has been in the emergency department 7 times in 3-4 months due to threats of self harm. A lot of those times she has called the ambulance for herself while I’ve been out.
once at the hospital, she wants to leave. She treats medical staff like crap (verbally abusive).

She was taken to ED in an ambulance via police escort at one time.
I delayed going, in the hopes she would stay.
She absconded and demanded I pick her up.
Poljce found her near the hospital, but because she knows what to say…if she says she’s no longer suicidal, she not a threat to herself or others, the police lawfully can’t take her back to the hospital against her will.
So I brought her home, only for her to start all over again.

She has almost daily outbursts over seemingly small inconveniences.

Content/trigger warning
She is verbally aggressive and went as far as threatening her sister (said she would -x- her throat).

I wasn’t home, but got a call from police to say they had arrested my youngest and was bringing my eldest in to make a statement.
I went down to the police station and listened to the recording my 17yo had made during the altercation. She had no remorse at all.
My eldest now has a restraining order in her sister, stating she cannot hurt or threaten to hurt her or damage belongings etc.

My 17yo now has a grudge, saying it’s unfair etc etc.

My eldest owns a cat (we have 3 cats and a dog…dog belongs to 17yo), and her cat has had anxiety problems since the dog came into our home.
She has been urinating outside the litter box, and for some reason, it’s almost always on my 17yo belongings.
We have the cat on anti anxiety medication and keep her confined 98% of the time which is helping.

Today, my 17yo’s dog peed on my shoes and in the laundry twice. He also defecated in 17yo’s bedroom 2 days ago. She cleaned it without making a scene.

Today she is saying a cat peed on her blanket. I inspected it, and suspect it was actually her dog as it was huge. But she didn’t want to hear it.

TW: Abuse

Content/trigger warning
I then started getting abusive messages from her, stating I am delusional, I don’t care about her or her sister, I want her to die, she hates me.
She threatens to end the cats lives any time she is annoyed by them. She claims to have crushed up pain killers [edited by moderator] hidden away to put in their food.

She has done a mental health assessment. She was referred to a psychologist only for them to say they’re not taking new patients. I was under he impression Ashe was given a new referral but she doesn’t let me attend any dr appointments and apparently I was wrong.
We have had CPS involved due to my daughter claiming I am neglecting her and don’t feed her or let her shower (because her sister had a shower before her and used the hot water).

We then had Anglicare involved with their MSIT program. That helped somewhat but the verbal aggression and threats continue.

I persist ally have a history of DV - witnessing it as a child and enduring two DV relationships.
I am not coping at all and feel completely lost.
My nervous system shuts down during conflict and I have memory loss due to going into fight, flight or freeze mode.

I honestly cannot do this anymore. We need immediate psych help but can’t get it.

There is soooo much more I could write but this is the bare bones of it.

Hi there,

You are going through a lot at the moment.

Re: I need help

Wow @NQR06088 that is a lot you are dealing with. I am so glad you've reached out here, and hope that some of the members have some thoughts that may also help you with how to manage those situations.

I can see you care for both your daughters a lot. I can imagine it would be very difficult when the youngest one is acting out and making threats and claiming she doesnt think you care. I can imagine it must be very scary too at time

My understanding on the mental health care plans for psychology, is that even if the doctor addresses it to a specific psychologist, you can take it to any (registered) psychologist you want. Medicare dont do it on the basis of a specific person, only so long as the provider is eligible to provide the service under Medicare. (This is based on both my knowledge as a patient, but also my prior work as a psychologist receptionist 7 years ago). Im not sure if this helps, but if it comes ip again about the need to get a new referral maybe this info he

I know where I live it can be hard to get into a face-to-face psychologist without first waiting 3-6 months. If your daughter is open to online telehealth, and number of them have availability quite quickly it seems. I've had the public health system recommend Psychology Today as a place to search for counsellors/psychs: https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/counselling

Im really sorry you are going through this. It is a lot for any person to cope with. I am so glad you've reached out. And I know others here will have better advice and experience on this than me too.

Re: I need help

Hi @NQR0608

It sounds like this has been an incredibly difficult time for you and your family.

It can be so difficult to get the right support for our loved ones when they are not willing or able to accept that support. Sometimes it can feel like an impossible task as no one can be forced to accept help, even when it seems so clear from the outside that they need it. Despite this it sounds as though you are doing your absolute best for your daughter in a very hard situation.

In terms of getting psychological support, you mention that you received a referral but were then told that the clinic was not accepting new clients at this time. Was this referral for a private practice or for community mental health?

If it was for private practice, that can sometimes happen, where a Dr will refer to a clinic without first having confirmed their availability. The good news is that you don't need a referral to access private practice psychologists, and just as @AlwaysMyself mentioned, even if you have been referred through a mental health care plan it's up to the individual which practitioner they use that plan with. Some psychology clinics will just require that the GP changes the practitioner name on the plan prior to the first session, but you are free to call around, and book appointments before this step.

Another resource that can be helpful in finding psychologists is the APS psychologist search tool.

I hope this is helpful, I know it can be a confusing process, and even more so when you're trying to assist someone else through it.

Take care and let us know how you go

Re: I need help

I've been going through this for 5 years with my son 🥺❤️ I wish I had some answers for you but I'm still as lost as you. He was hospitalised 4 years ago under a treatment authority. This was revoked 8 months later after they injected him every month but didn't provide any decent therapeutic support. You have her age and sex on your side. She's still under 18? The best advice I can give you I have found that the more support the young person has, the less intervention you get. I am a ride or die mum, I fiercely protected him but I've realised this doesn't help anyone in this situation. I encourage you to explore contacting an agency with authority and perhaps request intervention to have your daughter removed from your care for you and your daughter's protection and well-being. Hopefully, this will put some accountability back on them to provide care. It sounds like she might need immediate and intense care so she doesn't carry this into adulthood. And so the impact on your daughter and yourself is minimised. I know how devastating it is to live like this. All the best to you ❤️
