Let's discuss books and TBR!

Let's discuss books and TBR!

Hey everyone,

After what feels like forever, I’ve finally picked up Solitaire by Alice Oseman again — I’m now 11 chapters in, which is a decent jump from where I left off about a month and a half ago. My goal is to finish it before the end of July so I can start fresh with a new read in August!

Honestly, I’ve been trying to make reading more of a habit again, and having a mini goal like this helps. I try to read at least one book every month, which really does help me get away from the screen and all the distractions in life. It’s like giving myself a break — a small pause to slow down, refocus, and just be present with the story in front of me. I forgot how comforting it is to sit down with a book that doesn’t expect anything from you except to turn the page.

On my TBR (To Be Read) list:

  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (mostly to keep up with the Year 8 students at my placement — they’re so into it!)
  • Icebreaker by Hannah Grace
  • To Kxxl a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman
  • This Winter by Alice Oseman

Would love to hear what you’re currently reading or planning to read! Are you working through a TBR list, or are you more of a mood reader? And do you also set little reading goals like “finish this book before the month ends” — or is that just a me thing? 😂

Let’s swap titles and motivation. 💬📚

Some questions for discussion (feel free to answer any or all!):

  • What is one favourite book you’ve read so far — and why did it leave such a mark?

  • Do you have a favourite genre you always find yourself going back to?

  • What is one book you just couldn’t put down once you picked it up?

  • Is there a book that hooked you with its moral or message? What was it about, and why did it resonate?

  • Is there a character you deeply relate to? How so?

Oooh, love this!! I actually have a writing degree @ale_inmelb, and would you believe, I seldom read? I definitely need to get back into it (beyond self-help books 😂). I find focus really challenging though, even watching a movie is hard - social media has well and truly fried my brain! However, I genuinely feel reading is important for healthy cognition, it allows us to really use our imagination as well as our critical thinking - particularly when reading non-fiction. What are your thoughts?? ☺️

Re: Let's discuss books and TBR!

love this thread!! @ale_inmelb i remember reading loveless by alice oseman a few years ago for one of my uni subjects, and then i jumped into all the heartstopper comics which were super cute.

i go through reading phases (unfortunately i haven't been reading as much in the last 2).

  • What is one favourite book you’ve read so far — and why did it leave such a mark?

the sun and her flowers by rupi kaur. it's a book of poems and the author is a south asian woman growing up in America. a lot of the struggles she's dealt with in terms of identity, self-worth, family, love, etc., are things i could relate to. specifically, she touches on her relationship with her mum, and it was the first time i felt like someone understood what my parents were like.

  • Do you have a favourite genre you always find yourself going back to?

yep, i tend to read romance and fantasy the most!

  • What is one book you just couldn’t put down once you picked it up?

last one i couldn't put down was six of crows by leigh bardugo

  • Is there a book that hooked you with its moral or message? What was it about, and why did it resonate?

i remember reading never let me go by kazuo ishiguro a few years a go, and it's message around humanity, cloning, etc., definitely left an impression on me. @Appleblossom 1984 was also another book i think about often.

  • Is there a character you deeply relate to? How so?

hmm not yet. there's been characters i've admired and wish i was more like, but still waiting to find a fictional character i deeply relate to.

if you do read hunger games, let me know how it goes! it's also sitting in my very long tbr list!

  • Hmm I think The Four Agreements by Ruiz Miguel - it helped me massively in working through a lot of my social anxiety
  • Fantasy!! I am always more invested in a world when there's magic! Don't get me started on D&D lol
  • The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - incredible fantasy world, beautiful imagery!
  • Catch-22 - really captures the absurdity of life
  • Hmm nah too busy inventing my own characters I think!

Been keening for some Terry Pratchett - not actually read any but heard very good things - so I think an op shop mission is in my future hehehe 😋
