Let's discuss books and TBR!

Let's discuss books and TBR!

Hey everyone,

After what feels like forever, I’ve finally picked up Solitaire by Alice Oseman again — I’m now 11 chapters in, which is a decent jump from where I left off about a month and a half ago. My goal is to finish it before the end of July so I can start fresh with a new read in August!

Honestly, I’ve been trying to make reading more of a habit again, and having a mini goal like this helps. I try to read at least one book every month, which really does help me get away from the screen and all the distractions in life. It’s like giving myself a break — a small pause to slow down, refocus, and just be present with the story in front of me. I forgot how comforting it is to sit down with a book that doesn’t expect anything from you except to turn the page.

On my TBR (To Be Read) list:

  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (mostly to keep up with the Year 8 students at my placement — they’re so into it!)
  • Icebreaker by Hannah Grace
  • To Kxxl a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman
  • This Winter by Alice Oseman

Would love to hear what you’re currently reading or planning to read! Are you working through a TBR list, or are you more of a mood reader? And do you also set little reading goals like “finish this book before the month ends” — or is that just a me thing? 😂

Let’s swap titles and motivation. 💬📚

Some questions for discussion (feel free to answer any or all!):

  • What is one favourite book you’ve read so far — and why did it leave such a mark?

  • Do you have a favourite genre you always find yourself going back to?

  • What is one book you just couldn’t put down once you picked it up?

  • Is there a book that hooked you with its moral or message? What was it about, and why did it resonate?

  • Is there a character you deeply relate to? How so?

Love this @ale_inmelb!

I recently just the most recent hunger games book after reading (and loving) the original series in high school. I gotta say it felt a bit more difficult to read as an adult because I felt much more aware that the characters were children. They are great books though and explore a lot of difficult topics in a fairly nuanced way for a series aimed at teens.

  • What is one favourite book you’ve read so far — and why did it leave such a mark?

If I'm thinking in terms of the book I always go back to and have read the most that'd have to be Pride and Prejudice. It was my first foray into classic literature when I was doing English lit back in high school and I loved the character of Elizabeth. I also love how well Jane Austen does character studies and how real her characters feel. Jane Austen was something that my gran and I bonded over so it's all the more special to me now that she's passed. It's become a bit of a comfort read and I'll listen to the audiobook when I am struggling to fall asleep.

  • Do you have a favourite genre you always find yourself going back to?

I think this is a bit of a cheat because it's really broad, but classic literature. I love a good classic, especially those written by women

  • What is one book you just couldn’t put down once you picked it up?

Two books come to mind and they're both autobiographies: Educated by Tara Westover, and Down the Drain by Julia Fox. Both very different stories haha but I thoroughly enjoyed them both and tore through them. Oh now that I'm thinking about it also maybe I'm Glad My Mom Died by Janette McCurdy, I listened to that one on Audible and I later shared my account with my mum and had to give her a heads up before she saw that title without the context 😂

I've heard so many people talking bout Pride and Prejudice but haven't yet read it. I'm adding that to my TBR!

I love books and reading but feeling my age. lol. @ale_inmelb Good thread topic.

Nup, probably not going to read Hunger Games, probably too similar to my childhood. Books I liked from school days were 1984, The Getting of Wisdom and The Chosen.

What did you like about Educated and Down the drain? @Ru-bee

Current reading, is mainly dipping into old non fiction and books on spirituality. Eg., Wheels of Fire and a bible. I have read so much I don’t have a big TBR list! lol had to look that up. At least I am still trying to learn…

Great thread!

We need to talk about Kevin - such a hard dry read at first, and then YIKES! I was totally drawn in. I remember running home to read it!

  • Do you have a favourite genre you always find yourself going back to?

Realistic fiction, autobiographies. History. Hybrid texts. I don't like fantasy.

At this moment, I'm reading, "One Hundred Days" by Alice Pung. I'm also reading Detention by Tristan Bancks.
