Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@AlwaysMyself Hello my friend how are you? Are you doing ok?

You were saying you had not been well the few past weeks but rhings were picking up? Is this still the case? How is the handover going? Have you completed the trial yet? Wow 30,000 for the treatment is an enormous amount of money. I’m totally blown away to be honest. I wish it was covered by Medicare. That is just so unaffordable.

I hope so much your NDIS application is accepted. You need it and don’t need to be mucked around on this at all. It can take a little while. There’s a lot going on re NDIS things are really tough with the scheme.

Have you heard back yet re DSP? Yes getting to thet medical assessment stage is a good sign and I hope you get the good news of all clear.

As for me I’ve really run out of support options. I’m unwell and everyday is a big struggle for me. I’m really experiencing severe symptoms and my days are surviving. The panic attacks, anxiety, trauma and depression are still causing major problems. Nervous system can’t cope and I’m scared I’ll never recover. Feeling unloved and worthless. Not much happening on forums and that makes me sad.

Hi @Cuddlebear, I’m really sorry to hear how much you’re struggling at the moment. It sounds incredibly overwhelming and exhausting to be dealing with all of this day to day.

You’re not alone here, even when it feels like support is limited, we’re still here with you on the forums.

If things are feeling unmanageable or you need more immediate support, it might really help to reach out to a crisis service like Lifeline on 13 11 14, or someone you trust.

I’m really glad you’ve shared this 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Nala2022 How are you? You are such a good moderator and I appreciate you reaching out to me.

Yes it is incredibly hard and exhausting. I am safe. I’m having constant panic attacks coupled with anxiety and just need some connection with humans. I’ve found Lifeline not to be terribly useful and sometimes the experience is negative. The forums are much better with people being empathetic and understanding. I have a friend who’s online but not there at the moment.

I just feel very alone and being on here feels like someone is around and maybe there’s some hope in getting better. I’ve been through a lot. It’s been tough.

I do try hard to lift myself up and do the grounding and breathing etc. Unfortunateky they don’t really help much. I feel bad even reaching out here when I know others are really struggling too.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate that @Cuddlebear

I’m really glad I was online too so we could chat.

I’m sorry things have been so tough for you, it sounds really overwhelming going through so much at once. I’m really glad you find the forums helpful and that you’re able to connect with others here. You’re not alone.

I can also hear how much effort you’re still putting in, even when it doesn’t feel like it’s helping. That still matters, showing up and trying in itself is important.

Please don't feel bad and keep sharing when you need to, we’re here to support you 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Nala2022 That’s ok you’ve really been kind to me over the time you’ve been here.

I do find them helpful when there’s some people to chat to. It helps to feel a part of a community something I lack in life.

Yes it is overwhelming. I just really wish I could get a bit of relief and have no panic and anxiety even for a little bit of time. I’ve lost joy too in everything. Even if I try to do something that used to bring me joy I get none now. That’s really hard.

I wish there was something that could help me. Really help me recover. To hear people’s experiences of actual recovery you know to give me some hope.

I just feel so awful in this situation. 😞

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Always 💛

Yeah, I get that. It sounds really hard dealing with the anxiety and panic on top of losing the joy in things that once made you happy. That can be such a difficult thing to sit with @Cuddlebear

I really hope things start to feel a little lighter for you over time.

If you think it might be helpful, have you heard of the Mental Health Foundation Australia online support groups? Here's the link if you'd like to have a look: https://supportgroup.mhfa.org.au/

I wondered if hearing other people's experiences and connecting with others might give you a sense of community and hope. No pressure at all though, just something that came to mind while reading your post

I hear how awful things are feeling right now. We're here for you 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Nala2022 Thank you. I will take a look. Have you used it in the past? Yes hearing recovery hipe stories might help bring some hope. At the moment I don’t feel any hope in getting better.

Yes things are sitting very heavy and I’m still in my bed in my pj. No ability to even get dressed today. Just want to have some relief. Something good to happen that I feel joyful.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

No worries. I haven't used it personally, but a couple of people I know have found it helpful. I hope it might be helpful for you too if you decide to give it a go @Cuddlebear 💛

It sounds like things are feeling really heavy today. If staying in bed and staying in your PJs is all you can manage right now, that's okay.

I can hear how much you're longing for some relief and for something good to happen. When things have been this difficult for a while, it makes sense that hope can feel hard to hold onto.

I'll be logging off for today shortly, but I'll check back in when I'm back on tomorrow. In the meantime, please keep reaching out on the forums if you'd like some connection and support. 💛
