Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@Cuddlebear thanks for letting me know you're safe. i can see that it hasn't been easy coping, especially with the limited support available. i'm so sorry to hear your experience with the CATT team didn't go as planned. i'm really glad you've reached out here & connected with the community 💖

please know that the support you've received isn't a reflection of your worth - you do deserve to feel safe and heard. you deserve to live the life you want. it really sucks that life has thrown so many obstacles your way, but i also know that you're one of the strongest people i know and if anyone can overcome them, it is you. that being said, it's absolutely valid to feel tired and exhausted. anyone in your position would be, and you're not less for experiencing this. please do take breaks and remember that you're only human and you're doing the best you can with what you've got.

you have every right to feel frustrated and drained. there still a lot of changes and improvements that need to occur within our mental health system - and the good news is that those changes are constantly being worked on, so i have hope that better supports will become available and accessible with time. i wish i could make those system become available right at this instant though.

as always, if those feelings do get too overwhelming - please do reach out to crisis supports 💗 i think you've heard of Ask Izzy before, but i did want to link it again just in case they've got some new supports available to you to explore.

the community is here for you, your strength doesn't go unnoticed 💖

hi @AlwaysMyself feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - it sounds like you're in the process of applying for the DSP, is that correct? 🙂 I really wish you luck and all the best with all of the evidences you can get for the DSP application process! ❤️ When I was on the process of applying for DSP myself in the second half of 2023, I had to work soooooo fricken hard to get all of the evidences I needed and having to pay thousands of dollars to get the relevant assessment reports I needed to put in the application - it took me a total of 5 months!! it was stressful and a lot of work, but SO worth it especially when I myself wanted to get out of all the constant stress of being under job providers and having to follow the requirements related to looking for jobs, as I've never in my life have ever want to work for many reasons. I really wish you luck and rooting for you in getting all the evidences you need for your application.

Also, there's a Facebook group related to applying for DSP that I can send you the link of here as well (if the forum guidelines here allow me to) as the admin of that FB group is a DSP advocate herself and has helped sooooo many people including myself get approved for DSP.

It's really interesting to hear mental health professionals explaining the neuroscience behind certain things as they're usually very fascinating to hear and know about and can help us be more aware of that part about ourselves!! 😅

also, I remember last time you told me that you studied a bachelors degree in order to study overseas as an exchange student(?) last week I attended a webinar hosted by my uni about studying overseas, and because of my situation, (if I do ever wanna study overseas) then I would like to undertake a short-term partner program which only lasts for I think...around 4-6 weeks of studying overseas in total. Under DSP, 28 days is the maximum that I'll be able to get paid at whilst I'm overseas. But hopefully, I can at least stay overseas within the 28-day period if any of the short-term programs that I find suitable will be enough for me to be able to pay for everything on top of...if I were to receive the grant and the OS-HELP loan. I need to complete at least a total of 8 credits in order to be eligible for an overseas study. After I complete the unit I'm studying this trimester (until mid June), that would be a total of 5 credits that I've completed.

So sorry to hear @Cuddlebear . That sounds so hard. Do you have another one in your area that you can go to? @Cuddlebear

I'm sorry it's so hard. I just found PARC less traumatic than hospitals.

I'm sorry it's so hard for you right now.

@rav3n You are going to be so missed. The way you help lift people up and the way you recognise and see our strengths while also understanding how tough it all is.

Many of us have experienced poor services as the system collapses and burn out and lack of real funding means we lose the best workers and left with crumbs.

Yes I do know Ask Izzy and it was a good reminder.

Im trying so hard to be strong. I’ve gone through so much and just wish the changes to mental health supports could be accessed now. I wish you didn’t need the money to access what is needed at the time it’s needed.

Im going to do the best I can. I really want you to do well in all that life has to offer. You’ve saved lives through role because you’ve just done it so well. Thank you.

@tyme @There isnt another in my area. The Government was supposed to have 3 in my area not including the ones for younger people. But they’ve not done that.

The incident that occurred was something very serious and staff should have been onto it. I just can’t go into details due to guidelines.

Im not willing to risk more trauma in that PARC now.

Are there any other options for you @Cuddlebear ?

I'm so sorry to hear things are so hard for you , and that CATT wasn't so helpful.

What else can you do?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@Cuddlebear aww my heart feels so full, thank you so much for those kind words 💗

i wish money wasn't a barrier too - having places like SANE where support is free gives me hope that one day, there'll be a lot more of these services. i'm keeping my fingers crossed!

i'm really glad i got to e-meet you and this community, you've all inspired me in so many different ways. i know you'll continue to the best you can, and i'll also work on doing the same for myself - it's nice to know we'll be working on these goals together 💖

Hello lovely how are you? I’m struggling to keep up with posts. Please do not think I don’t care. I do.

I’ve hit rock bottom. I’m struggling to get any supports and everyday I’m just trying to survive second by second. I have no more capacity to keep reaching out to services and crisis phone lines that can’t help me.

I saw neuro doctor who’s found some permanent brain damage and is doing further testing. It’s totally broken me.

I want to be engaged here but doing so has been so hard. I don’t want to be here just seeking support I want to give back to people too. I think the changes on the forums have also affected me and recovery club has not put in the daily webinars which I relied on so much. I’m shattered.

Please let me know how you all are. I know each of you is also going through a lot.

Hello @Cuddlebear,

I just saw this post, so I thought I would quickly let you know that I have read it, so please feel welcome to respond to me here. I completely get struggling to keep up with posts, we always know you care.

You have so, so much going on, so please be gentle with yourself. 🫶

Learning about the damage to your brain must feel so incredibly scary. I am relieved to hear they are doing more testing, but I am curious to know if they have offered you any support or care around how to manage your symptoms?

I am so sorry to hear that the changes to the forums/recovery club are impacting you. What can we do to provide extra support for you right now? Please let me know. 💛

@Cuddlebear only just seeing your post from earlier today now. Sending many hugs and care to you. 🤗🥰😢. I wish things weren't so hard for you of course, and I'm here to listen and understand you more. But i know its not the same or a substitute for professional support. But i hope we can be of some support and therapeutic peer friendship.

I recall how poorly your PARC experience was and the start of the taper crisis during it.

I dont think you mentioned before about the experience with the other patient that led to an ambulance; I'm so sorry - that would have been extra trauma too. Its discouraging that the staff were not aware or did not act on seeing your distress to provide adequate support. I'm so sorry. 😢. As others said, its not a reflection of your worth - its a reflection of their failure or the systems failure/gaps. You are worth care, understanding and love.

I wonder whether starting with remembering the things about yourself that are positive is possible? 🤔

I'm always happy to remind you of the reasons I like you, if that helps give you something to hold onto in the mean time. 🥰. (Just ask me).

It may not help the anxiety, but it may briefly distract the mind and also help with the feelings of worthlessness a little.

Do you ever find it helpful to read/remember things you are grateful for?

I know it doesnt help me usually, but I know for most/many people it seems to.

Does thinking/seeing/hearing something funny ever help with even a 30 second relief from anxiety?

If so, is there anything you recall that you think is funny you can share with me/us? 🥰

Laughing really helped me when i had my severe panic attack & anxiety experience, even though it was only temporary relief.

I wonder whether a brief public hospital admission (not PARC) would be possible for you?

A bit of respite, plus they can see the degree of anxiety and panic you are in and how to best help you with that. They may even be able to review and better advise (than your GP) on your current medication situation where you are between tapers of medications. I wonder whether being "stuck" on this lower dosge is contributing to the increased anxiety at all? (Obviously i have no idea of the situation with the meds, but just food for though is all).

Presenting to the ED during a severe panic and severe thoughts episode might be a gateway to this being offered, if you were open to the idea. 🤔. But it would be important to be fully open with them about how bad things are for you currently i think, from my own experience (i always downplay things in how i say things because "i'm used to it". Unfortunately, i am now aware, this has caused doctors to think my distress is less acute than it is. I have learnt to describe what i think and feel, rather than compare it to "my normal" on a scale).

Here with you @Cuddlebear, whatever your path is.

@rav3n is leaving? I have missed that news 🤔. Sorry (for us) to hear, but glad (for you) to hear you have something ahead that is feeding where you want to grow into.

It's been good knowing you around the past (9 months?) I've been here. 🤗
