Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

I’ve been getting neuropathy in my feet again. Cervical stenosis has gotten worse hence the neuropathy plus the pain. Due to the meds I already take, pain relief options are very, very limited @MissGremlin

back to the physio for him to work on the “knots” in my back, more expenses I’ve got to cover. Specialist thinking recent stress levels be linked to cause of the knots

@Flutterbug9 that sounds very tough to deal with sweet and I imagine being limited with pain relief must make it hard to manage the pain.

I know it's another expense to cover but I'm hoping that physio can help to give you some relief from the pain.

Im so thankful for Medicare @MissGremlin

within next few weeks have review appointments with my Haematologist and Cardiologist in preparation for pain relief infusion. Due to my heart plus blood pressure issues, need Cardiologist to give approval prior to having the each infusion. If cardiologist feels is too risky than current plans for infusion get cancelled and I will still have to pay for cattery, even if cats not there.

due to GP not having done a review that was due 4mths ago, needing Haematologist appointment preceded by blood test a week prior. One good thing, no hospital stay at this stage as don’t need new bone marrow sample taken.

I’ve been awake since 6:13am. Just gone midnight, no sleep. Eyes are tired, brain is running a marathon. I’ve tried going to bed around 9pm and taking only one sleep meds. Up to mid day the following day before the fog feeling finally lifts, I suspect due to brain still running nightly marathons even after taking the sleep meds

sorry for dumping, I try not to

thanks for being you

better feed these cats and spend few hours in bed

Thinking of you and sending wishes for as pleasant a week as possible

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 yes Medicare is something I'm very thankful for aswell.

I'm hoping that all the tests go ok so that you can have your infusion sweet and you don't have to pay for the cattery even if your cats aren't there.

That's frustrating that the gp didn't do a review when they were meant to. But glad no hospital stay is needed, that's definitely a bonus not needing the bone marrow sample.

Fingers crossed you can get some sleep soon, though I know what it's like when your brain is running a marathon. Sleep meds can definitely leave you with brain fog especially if you aren't able to sleep so they seem to sit in your system for longer.

It's ok sweet, I'm happy to be here to listen ☺️. It's not dumping, it's sharing what's going on for you and it's better to share than to sit with everything alone, we are always here for you ❤️.

Thankyou sweet and i hope the week is better than last week was for you. Take care of your wonderful self ❤️.

Sounf both stressful and physically painful with the medical things currently for you @Flutterbug9 . I hope the haem & cardio appointments go well and dont return anything abnornal, so you can do the upcoming infusion as planned. Fingers crossed for you.

I hope the physio helps with the knots (and does that in turn help reduce the spinal stenosis / pressure on it and pain?).

The costs are frustraiting for all of it, even with medicare paying some things, I hear you.

I hope you and @MissGremlin were both (or still are maybe even!) Able to get some good sleep eventually.

I finally got to sleep and i think (on my scale) i had a relatively deep sleep (i dont recall waking more than a few times, and my back pain also supports the idea that i didnt wake to reposition as often 😅 - this is how i tell lol. Its a catch of having a "good sleep" that i imagine some others with pain conditions can relate to also?)

My male dog stole the bed from my female dog last night when i lay down lol. He usually uses his own cushion he prefers to sleep on. But sometime whilst i was asleep he moved off the bed and the female dog claimed her usual place on the bed instead.

My headache and body still feeling a bit abnormal (but a lot bettee than yesterday afternoon/night), so i will take it easy and try to do quiet sedentary things this morning. I already had an appointment booked with my physical-GP for today, so i will try to remember to let him know what happened & get him to check/ensure my BP is back to low-HT or normal. I just hope it doesnt take much time out of the main focus for the appointment ☹️. Plus my rash came back within 24 hours of not using the cream, despite having had a shower that day - so i also need to let him know and ask advice (as he said im only to use the cream for 1 week, which it has been).

Hope you all have a reasonable day (whatever level that means for each of you individually 🥰). Take care of yourselves. I know all of you have a lot of hard things being faced and/or juggled in life - which is sadly why we "get each other" most of the time I think. 🤗 i wish you didnt have to know the pain either.

@MissGremlin

meeting earlier this morning which I forgot until I got text message asking where I was. Comments about why bother inviting me immediately stung. I tried explaining my autism and RSD. In short, didn’t go well. Don’t know why I bothered.

whilst looking for the first one below I came across the second one. Second one is the one I mentioned recently. It’s me to a tee for decades, so many others don’t understand

hope they give you a laugh. Supermarket one appeals to my type of humour

@Jynx I’ve been searching for 2nd one for ages. Reminded me of one of our recent chats

@Flutterbug9 oh those comments really would have hurt sweet, I'm sorry it didn't go well. Sending you hugs ❤️.

Haha both those quotes are great, the first one made me giggle the second is honestly so relatable 😂

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself I live with constant pain at base of my skull that is technically neck pain. Pain never stops 24/7, 365 days each yr, same as I’ve mentioned to your question/s in the past. Tense muscles in upper torso area and/or stress results increase pain due to impact on spinal nerves. Can’t get comfortable in bed due to very high degree of pain. Am I tired? Tired is an understatement. Updated notification settings done ages ago for roll through benefit. I’ve got variety of medical tests I’ve got appointments for, possible outcome for some are very scary. Status of discs that are degenerating is highly stressful

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I hear you @Flutterbug9 , the pain, the fatigue, the stress. I hope the upcoming test go "as well as possible". And i hope the upcoming infusion can proceed and gives some relief again (even though its not a permanent refief from what you have indicated from the first one you had). Wish i could take your pain away ❤️‍🩹💔.
