Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

I'm good @Cuddlebear...AOK (for a work day lol 😋)

I can hear that it is hard doing today 😔 AND yet here you are doing it! Expressing yourself and contributing and asking for what you need. That's cool and admirable.

Hang in there my friend...

Taking gentle loving care of yourself, slow and steady....

I'll be around most of the day. If there is anything specific we can do to support or distract. Let us know.

@hopeful_hannah Thank you. Im glad your day is Ok despite being at work. We all appreciate the work you do for us.

I’m trying so hard to hang in there.

The panic is overwhelming and caused from complex trauma. My body is just falling apart and I can’t stop worrying.

It just won’t stop. 😞

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @Cuddlebear

late reply as I’m not on the forums much currently. Lots of things I need to get done and haven’t been doing them. Currently have large laundry basket on drop of my drying filled with sheet sets from winter last year still wanting to be folded and put away. As one of lots of things.

ive been doing bare minimum essential for ages, even then stacks of things have built up.

ive gotten involved with some different activities which all grab and keep me attention. 3 activities each week with a 4th once a month. This sees me out of the house 3 days each week plus psychologist (who I am hoping to be able to see once a fortnight, depending on their availability.

Ive lost all interest in almost everything. Initial trial to get balance back for me including enjoying craft and reading involves me being on the forums on a complete adhoc basis

blood tests results showing I have very low fluctuating white blood cell (known as neutropenia) has been followed by appointments with haematologist including a bone marrow tap. No specific cause found. Additional blood tests requested by haematologist showed I was low in one specific vitamin, been taking that vitamin OTC for more than 12mths now. Originally GP said decision would be made after 1yr on tablets whether to swap to injection or not, hasn’t been done.

@AlwaysMyself Hello my beautiful friend. I’m checking in here because I’ve been thinking of you and am concerned you might not be OK.

It’s totally ok to take a break from forums it is just unusual for you to do so without a heads up.

I want you to know that I am here for you and that I’m praying you are OK. If you do see this message and are able to respond it would be wonderful.

Lots of love, hugs, healing and strength.

Hello lovely! How are you this week? @AlwaysMyself 💛

I would love to hear some updates around your peer support sessions and how body doubling has felt.

I completely hear you on finding ways to navigate your more negative feelings, especially when they are very present. Acknowledging them and giving them a voice is a wonderful strategy. I wonder if a small gateway into lighter sensations/thoughts could come from going to the parts of your body that just feel 'okay' and seeing what they have to say?

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on masking - you have such a strong sense of who you are. ☺️

I suppose we all wear some kind of social mask as we 'feel' each other out. It shows a level of emotional intelligence to 'meet people where they're at', so to speak. On the other hand, being our full, vibrant, or direct selves from the outset allows us to be truly seen and accepted by the right people for us.

And I am sure I am not alone here in saying that we appreciate all the 'you' that you bring to the table here. 🥰

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you @Cuddlebear . Sorry I have been absent the last week. I wasn't OK for a few days, and then the last half-week has been so busy as I am away for 2 weeks now (until another 1.5 weeks). Hopefully this week Thursday and Friday will be quieter days for me.

I'm sorry it was so hard for you the other day last week 😢 I wish I had been able to come online to sit with you. It was also the day I was very not well myself. But I was able to get an ad-hoc appointment with my counsellor to help talk through it and stabilise me again. Since then it has been a real mixed bag - but I will post the more positive update separate to tag a few more people in too. But there has been some positive things also which is good to be able to say.

I am very grateful for @hopeful_hannah having been here with you that day. 🤗

How has your week been since then?

@Flutterbug9 @MissGremlin

I haven't had time yet to read through posts since last week, but I have kept all the emails with tag notifications so I will get there! I care - just a lot going on last week and now I am away so i have limited free time currently. Please don't think I am ignoring you; I care! 🤗🤗 I will get to your thread when I can!
