Managing relationships

Managing boundaries and triggers with friends.

Managing boundaries and triggers with friends.

I’m not sure if this is something I have already made a post about before but I really feel like I’m having a hard time with it right now and would appreciate some advice. Just for some context: I started struggling with anxiety around age 14 and probably depression when I was about 16 and I’m now 20. My twin sister was hospitalised for anorexia when I was 15 but she was in a pretty bad state for quite a few years before that. She’s also had her own struggles with adhd and low moods (not really sure if it’s depression or not) and so a lot of my parents and my other sisters and just everyone’s attention was understandably put onto my sister. I’m not mad about this at all but it did put me in a position where I literally didn’t talk about any of those struggles to anyone for years and still don’t to my family. I really only talk to my therapist at the moment. We are working on opening up more in therapy but with my social anxiety it’s just a long process. Anyway the actual thing: I have a friend who I have recently become close to who has ocd and anxiety and it often I guess is something that affects her mood quite a lot. She always says that I am always attune to her needs and really help her when she need it but recently I’ve honestly been feeling really triggered being her emotional support person. It feels like my sister again and I feel like there’s no space for me. She’s even said before than when she’s upset she can’t handle other people’s issues but even if I’ve had a bad day I’ll find a way to make space for my friends. I guess sometimes I feel frustrated cause I know I deal with everything myself and I just get annoyed that other people don’t. I know that’s horrible of me and not healthy and maybe her problems are worse than mine but it’s how I feel. I have never expressed this frustration to her but I just don’t want it to boil over and I’m honestly sick of never feeling understood or seen. I know I need to make space for myself but sometimes I wish I had someone who could make space for me. Anyway I’m not really sure exactly what I’m asking for but any advice or tips would be appreciated. Sorry I know it’s a long one.

Good on your for setting those boundaries @Tarmac_6 and being able to communicate this. When you first set boundaries, it may be a bit rocky, but if you are consistent, then we hope it will only get easier @Tarmac_6

Wow @MJG017, I really appreciate that message. Do you think I need to have an honest conversation with her and ask maybe like how would be the best way for me to tell her I need some space? Thankyou for your validation.

So i just saw the 2nd page and saw that you've told her. I know it couldn't have been easy... at all! But i think it's really important that you did. Hopefully she reacts well, and understands. But it may take some time. Hopefully she sees that you are trying your best to be there for her, but that you do need some support yourself. We do our best to help the people we care about, but at the same time (and i've only learnt this recently) sometimes that help and support is just beyond us, and we need some 'me time'. Otherwise it just grinds us down until we're no help to anyone. Then they lose that support anyway. So by helping yourself, you're helping her as well.

Thankyou @MJG017, I’m just worried about how my mental health is going to go if I don’t take a break tonight. Hopefully it will get easier, thanks for your help.

@Tarmac_6

It got easier for me when I started to take my own breaks. I found that even just allowing yourself to do it in the first place is a big help. It just removes a lot of pressure.

Yes @Tarmac_6 ?

I guess it is about YOU and looking after you because if you don't, who will?

How are you today anyway?

Hi @tyme, yes you’re very right. I guess it’s just hard sometimes to put yourself first. I’m ok today feeling a little better than yesterday. I think it just made me really drained so after some sleep and time to myself I’ve been good.

Hang in there my friend @Tarmac_6 . I guess when you are not used to looking after yourself, it can be very draining! Way to go that you've put some of those boundaries in place. I hope it only gets easier from here 🙂

Re: Managing boundaries and triggers with friends.

hey @Tarmac_6 just caught up on this thread, and i'm so proud of you for letting your friend know that you needed the night off! i absolutely hear you on how scary and uncomfy it can be to set boundaries - it's still something i'm not 100% with, but with practice it does get much easier (and you'll start feeling a lot better too).

we all need some time and space to get our energy back, it's a very human thing. so keep going, take your time and be kind to yourself. you've got this 💙

How are things going for you @Tarmac_6 ? Been travelling okay?

Re: Managing boundaries and triggers with friends.

Hi @tyme, Thankyou for checking in. I’ve been going ok though I definitely think the situation has spiked my anxiety a bit as it’s just brought up old things I hadn’t thought about in a while. We had a good chat where I wasn’t completely honest but I did tell her I was having a rough couple of days and she was supportive. I have therapy in a couple days so I’ll also talk about it then. Thanks for all your support 🙂
