All things books

All things books

Are you anything like me? Who's your favourite author? Fiction or nonfiction? Do you have a genre you like? Audio book? E-Book? Or physical book? Can you read something multiple times?

So I'm a bit of a bookworm and purposefully don't pick up books because I know what happens when I do, I find it difficult to stop reading something until it's finished.

Take for example that I just finished reading all 5 books of the hunger games books, 62 hours and 45 minutes in about a week.

Personally, I like Ted Dekker as an author, but also drawn to Al Lacy and some of Janette Oke.

Suzanne Collins for her Hunger Games series

Veronica Roth for her Divergent series

I seem to be drawn to dystopian stuff, but like historical fiction writing too

I love my audio books for fiction, physical books for non fiction and there are certain series I can read multiple times.

So your turn now, what do you love about books?

Re: All things books

This is my to-read pile over my Christmas holidays. @avant-garde @tyme @0ddsidian @Abz

I've started Brimstone! But haven't gotten far into it yet.

Gosh, I haven't read a novel is so long, @NightFury! I did buy a poetry book while I was on holiday a couple of weeks ago. It's called "Love is for all of us" and it's "poems of tenderness and belonging from the LGBTQIA+ community and friends". Reading it actually inspired me to write a poem (first the first time in years).

I also saw the book "I Who Have Never Known Men", and it seemed really interesting, so maybe I'll read that over the Christmas / New Year period.

I won a book from my local radio station that I get to pick up today on my way to a Grinch-mas party. I'm keen for the book, it's a science fiction signed copy. I love science fiction

That's so cool @avant-garde ! Have you always been into science fiction stories? I think I generally lean towards fantasy books a bit more, but I'm open to most genres. I don't like horror stories though.

Re: All things books

I dont do horror either @0ddsidian

I like some historical fiction @avant-garde but not if it is overly written for yanking the reader's heartstrings. It feels like overacting to me. I guess I am very sensitive.

Mostly I like literary cultural gems and non fiction, though as a kid I liked science fiction.

Books currently on my bed: Behave by Robert Sapolsky, Dawkins' God by McGrath, Blood, Sweat and Tears by Donkin, which is actually a helluva lot better than the arrogant Evolutionary biologist rude dude, The Sea by John Banville, which is a tad overwritten, but he got the big prize, Wheels of Life: a users guide to the Chakra System, and The God of Surprises.

I love that the poetry book inspired you to write @0ddsidian

They both sound like interesting books to read.

Re: All things books

@avant-garde I’d be very interested to know whether you think/feel that historical fiction set during war time can be a bit of a lazy writing style because it’s too easy to find drama in that scenario…?
thanks. Another historical fiction fan!

I grew into liking sci-fi, liking Stargate as a kid and the idea "well it's nothing like my reality"

I like fantasy too, I've been listening to a Melanie Cellier for months now and she's heavy in the fantasy realm but less in the sci-fi

@Abz

Most definitely NOT

i pick series by less known authors with a heavy research base that is based on real life accounts.

To think that it's lazy to write? Nope, I think it takes a gifted writer that can write something that hasn't yet been written simply because of how much there is.

Now what I do think is a cop out writing style is anything that has scenes in every chapter with intimate scenes.

I don't recommend Firebird Chronicles for this reason. Disgusting.
