Support options for adult daughter

Support options for adult daughter

Hi, I have been away from SANE for a few years but my adult daughter's mental health is declining and she and I are unable to afford a private psychiatrist. I support her as much as I can (we live in different states) with positive reinforcement of her feelings and financially when I can.

It breaks my heart to see her at nearly 30, struggling to live a 'normal' life - personal care reduction, self-loathing and self-harm, unemployed and feeling unemployable, trying her best to 'fit in' and often failing.

She has struggled since childhood, starting in Grade 2 with not fitting in with the cool kids. This was then exacerbated by being teased unmercifully due to her red hair when she commenced high school.

She has suffered trauma due to the deaths of quite a few of her friends, a 24 yr old cousin, family members, a 7 week old baby living with us at the time and the murder of her brother-in-law. All in all a traumatic period in her teens and twenties.

Getting affordable help is the main problem. She was receiving counselling as a young teenager but aged out and then received adult counselling for some time but the service she was using changed it's focus to sexual assault and she was no longer eligible under their umbrella of services.

She has a degree in psychology which in itself can be an obstacle due to self-diagnosis. She really needs to see a psychiatrist to have a correct diagnosis of her mental health issues and to receive the support she needs.

She lives in [edited by moderator] Brisbane and does not drive so feels isolated from getting support somewhere she can get to easily.

Hopefully someone on here will have some suggestions on where she can get this support as I am at a loss.

Re: Support options for adult daughter

hey @Lowie welcome back to SANE!!

i'm so sorry to hear how hard things have been for you and your daughter. i can see that she's been through so much, and she's lucky to have you in her corner to look out for her. she absolutely deserves the best support, and it sucks that its been hard to find.

have you looked into community health services? you can select the category and then enter your postcode on this site: Services | Metro South Health and it will show you some services local to you. you could also contact Stride Mental Health and they might be able to provide some suggestions too.

here's also a few links to finding psychiatrists (you'll need to enter your postcode):

if travel is an issue, would your daughter be open to telehealth appointments? there's filters/options in the above links to find psychiatrists who offer telehealth too.

SANE has a Guided Recovery program that's free if she wanted to check it out? it's completely online and its for anyone aged over 18 - it might be something she can join in on while waiting for a psychiatrist appointment? they offer a few counselling calls within the program.

hope those links help, and also hope you're taking care of yourself too 💙

p.s. i've edited out the suburb as our community guidelines encourage members to avoid sharing specific/detailed locations to protect your privacy and keep everyone safe. you can read more about it here: Guidelines and technical support - SANE Forums 😊

Re: Support options for adult daughter

Sorry to hear how hard it is for your daughter; the adult system is so different than for <18.

Has she approached her GP and had a mental health plan produced with the government subsidized sessions? Or does her GP offer longer sessions to discuss mental health with her?

It is not psychiatry but can offer strategies in identifying issues; and may be identifying priorities for her care.

Thank you so much for your reply rav3n. It is much appreciated and has given me a couple of options I can check out on her behalf.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

She has had Mental Health Plans in the past but still cannot afford the co-payment that is often required.

I will investigate some psychiatrists who bulk bill certain patients and have telehealth availability.
