Something’s not right

News, war, genocide, ways to manage it all.

News, war, genocide, ways to manage it all.

If you are anything like me, you might like to read the news and keep up with current events. Part of my morning routine is sitting down with a coffee and opening the abc news.

There is a lot of concerning things going on in the world. Nearly every article is about international conflicts, local domestic violence and murders, all the worst things possible with no humanity.

I find it hard to switch it off. But I also feel like I can't turn a blind eye to it all.

The Iran/Israel conflict is looking like it could be all out war in the middle east, even possibly the US getting involved, with maybe Australia being dragged in.

I have my own opinions of the last few years of conflicts around the world. Often I dont agree with the way the government handles it all. But I am Australian, if we get involved, I wouldn't be given a voice, like so many haven't.

I wish we could stay out of conflict. But turning a blind eye to the building tensions has mad the whole situation worse. Idk the answer. Going to protests isnt changing anything. I feel powerless.

I wish nationalism and patriotism wasn't a thing. We are all humans, we are a part of humanity. I dont think war and killing is ever justified. I hate thinking how many have died or starved just because they were born in a specific place or country. I hate racism and war is an extension of that. Its about greed and power. And humanity pays the ultimate price.

Idk I'm just thinking I need to find a way to feel like I'm contributing and staying informed, but also find space to switch it off and be present and focus on my self.

Hey @The-red-centaur

I am glad you mentioned it. It is a concern for all of us. I agree with your post.

@Appleblossom thanks. Its hard to know what to do and how to respond.

The news also scares me sometimes. I feel overwhelmed and really sad by what people do to other people. I wish there was more kindness and compassion in this world.

Hearing you @The-red-centaur. My son wanted to talk about it too, and we listened to a podcast about it and cooked together tonight. It’s important to address it and not to ignore it.

I understand @The-red-centaur. I feel very similar to you.

What helps me (and I hope it helps you even in a tiny way) is remembering that the news only reports bad things. That's not to downplay what's happening in the Middle East or Ukraine at the moment, but I think it is true that you will only hear bad things in the news, by design.

Here are some positive things I like to remember that generally don't get reported on:

  • We humans, as a whole, collectively solved the hole in the ozone layer problem. If you don't remember, this was caused by the use of various gases (CFCs used in refrigerators, and leaded petrol mostly) that affected the ozone layer allowing more radiation to reach the earth. Well, we humans got together and banned these gasses. Now the hole has all but healed.
  • There are far fewer people living in poverty than ever before.
  • Over population is not going to be a big problem. It is estimated the world will top out at 11 billion people. That's still a lot, but only 25% more than we have now. The reasons for this are positive: people from developing countries that traditionally had large families to help run the family business or farm are now prosperous enough they are choosing to have fewer children. This also means they have more funds to spend on things like health care and education and to feed back into their community.
  • Solar energy is cheaper than coal, and has been for the last 5 years. There are now entire, large countries, like the UK, who are routinely having days where they run 100% on renewable energy. There is also clever developments like using dams as "batteries" to store energy for low-sun periods.
  • Electric cars are now common place and more affordable ones are coming on the market every year. Not to mention the safety features incorporated into new cars have prevented so, so many accidents.
  • Due to advances in treatments the chances of dying from cancer has dropped significantly in the past few decades. We have also proven that, collectively, humans can eradicate entire diseases like polio and measles.

There are many more positive things too. But these are the ones I like to remember when I read the news.

And please do remember, the news does only show the bad and sensational stuff because that's what drives clicks.

@The-red-centaur I find the news to be too much, I can barely watch it. I need a ton of breaks. People sometimes convince themselves they’re doing everything for humanity. Killing and torturing innocent people is disgusting and there is no justification. It’s difficult knowing I have relatives closer to conflict regions

@The-red-centaur I am afraid too. I fear for the lives of the innocent people, including my relatives 🥺. I also hate how much hate and racism is present in the world, even within Australia. I come from a Muslim background
