Psychosis Mum

Psychosis Mum

I always prided myself on being a super grounded person and mother. My psychosis hit almost 2 years ago and I spent 18 months ingrained in delusion with auditory and visual hallucinations. Now I am back to normal. I am having trouble coming to terms with the massive fall out. The public humiliation, the loss of a 20 year relationship under delusional circumstances (i wasn't happy anyway but genuinely loved my partner and lived for him and my family). The loss of friendships. The trauma of the system. Can anyone else relate as a mother?

Re: Psychosis Mum

Hey @Mmlmm, thanks for sharing your experiences with the community!

Sounds like you are going through a really tough time at the moment, after psychosis and dealing with the effects afterwards. It takes courage to come to the Forums and share your story with the community, being vulnerable and talking about your challenges.

I am not a mother, but I can relate to your experience as I am diagnosed with schizophrenia and have had many psychotic episodes. The impact that my episodes had and dealing with things afterwards was devastating for me. I have since found a pathway to recovery and leading a meaningful and purposeful life that I could not have dreamed of only a few years ago.

I'm curious what supports do you have around you? I'm so glad that you have found the Forums and we have other supports here at SANE that you might benefit from taking a look.

This is usually only available in certain postcodes, however access is being extended to our Forums community. We understand this isn't always suitable for people so you can check out the Guided Recovery here - Welcome to SANE’s Guided Recovery and decide if you want to pursue it.
Whenever you are ready, you can chat to SANE’s mental health support workers who can assist with a referral, simply call 1800 187 263 or chat on the webchat at sane.org and let them know that you were referred from forums. They can help you with questions and check things like whether you have enrolled before or not. They're available 10am – 8pm Mon-Fri.
And there is the RecoveryClub also, which is a self directed program: Please contact SANE's Support Line from 10 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday to speak with a Mental Health Support Worker for support with the Guided Recovery, RecoveryClub, Portal, and Groups here: SANE Support Centre: 1800 187 263.

SANE's Fact Sheets: Our factsheets & guides provide easy-to-read information on complex mental health issues for everyone Factsheets & Guides (sane.org)

I encourage you to continue to reach out to your peers here on the Forums and please ask any question you might have!

Take care

Re: Psychosis Mum

Hello @Mmlmm I'm so glad to hear you've come through that experience and out the other side but I agree the loss of identity and self-esteem is huge. And you grieve for your lost self and lost relationships.

I'm not a mum. But jI survived a long working life punctuated by occasional relapses and times where my illness caused me to behave inappropriately and/or sabotage my work efforts, impacting colleagues. The embarrassment was extreme. But I persevered, and returned and/or rebuilt where I was able.

There are many mums in the forums community and I hope some see your post and reassure you and support you.

Re: Psychosis Mum

Thankyou for sharing your experience with us.

With my children I feel that it is good to give them the understanding that mental health is like any other illness and there should be no need for embarassment. It is important to remove the stigma that is attached to behaviours which are beyond our control.

It can be very challenging to accept that we can't always protect the 'hidden' facets of our mind from public view but these aspects of ourselves exist for a reason.

For myself, I draw strength and resilience from knowing that I don't always know what is best for me so I must accept that what happens, does so out of necessity and that I am part of the positive change in society's understanding.

Accept the gift, it's a positive change which will benefit our children to be more empathetic adults. 💖

Re: Psychosis Mum

I relate completely but my vice was addiction. It Took away my marriage, children and everything and anyone good in my life. I am currently trying to rebuild my life but I am doing it alone and I don’t know what to do on my own. I really have no one. And I’ve always had SOMEONE. I don’t know how to even put myself first in anything. I am scared of where I’ll end up if I don’t find out soon.
So yeah I can relate it really sucks hey?
