Struggling with my adult sons mental health and I am too far away from where he lives to pop in
I don't want to overstep but he is using words today that indicate suicidal tendencies - I don't know where to turn

I can see how worrying this is for you. Do you feel this is out of character for him? I'd strongly suggest you contact 000 so they can conduct a welfare check - if you are concerned about his safety.

@tyme Are you really sure a welfare check is wisest. They can be horrible experiences. I deal with a lot of people damaged by them. I know it’s an official protocol, but maybe soon there will be evidence based studies querying their efficacy. It can also damage trust in relationships, as people may stop sharing. Sorry.

I have also worried greatly. There are a range of approaches that do not use police, like alt2su and The wildflower alliance… who have alternative online approaches, where they do not escalate services. Yes seek support for him and yourself. It’s horrific to hear and fear for a loved one. Setting up therapeutic supports may be better than crisis approach.

No, it is not the wisest, but it is what can be done in the moment, seeing it is nearly 10pm. I've had first hand experience and I know it's not pleasant, but if it means life and death, then is it worth it?
Other alternatives are definitely worth exploring if it was not an immediate safety risk.
