Struggles with mental health

Here’s a thoughtful, honest, and impactful message you can post on the SANE Forum, striking a balance between vulnerability, self-awareness, and your desire to be understood:

Title: Struggling with Depth, Disconnection, and Emotional Exhaustion

Hi everyone,

I’ve been sitting with a lot of conflicting thoughts lately, and I wanted to share them here because I’m tired of being misunderstood or told to "just be positive." I’ve always been someone who feels things deeply—pain and frustration with life and status as a temp migrant. I have a strong inner world, and sometimes it feels like that makes me an outlier.

I’m surrounded by people who say they care, but I often feel like a miniscule group of people genuinely listens without trying to fix me or judge me. I cherish those rare friendships, but I also feel drained—mentally and emotionally—especially when I'm expected to be cheerful. I have been contemplating a job change, but the uncertainty surrounding my visa status is hurting my prospects.

I’m an introvert, I connect with dark music, and I’ve had a history of feeling like an outsider since I was born. Some days, I want to isolate and beat myself, while other days, I crave being heard without having to put on a mask.

I don’t know what this all adds up to—burnout, depression, existential fatigue? All I know is I feel emotionally raw, and I’m looking for a space where people won’t downplay that or tell me to just “look on the bright side.”

If you relate, or have any words, I’d really appreciate it. I’m not expecting a fix or a new job—just maybe a moment of human connection that feels real.

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day/night.

Re: Struggles with mental health

@rav3n I am searching for positives from the interview, and am hoping for some luck.

I think my interpersonal skills shone through rather than my technical capabilities.

yesss that's really good! @Lowrida29 i find that being self-aware of my strengths and weakness helps me use it my advantage, i hope you're able to use your interpersonal skills to your advantage too! i'm sure there'll be companies really value that.

@rav3n Agreed. Returning to application mode is tough after an interview since you are back to tailoring applications for similar or partially relevant roles.

Also, despite my experience, I believe I am not technically sound, and may struggle to code or write correct queries under pressure. Furthermore, it has become a norm at most companies, and has triggered my imposter syndrome.

Re: Struggles with mental health

hey @Lowrida29!

yeah it can be tough returning to application mode, it almost feels like a setback even though it's a sign of bouncing back in my opinion.

from what i've heard from my friend who works in IT, a lot of people come in with the bare minimum knowledge and grow during the roles. writing codes under pressure sounds overwhelming, i reckon i'd freeze up and find it tricky too! i have full faith that with the right opportunity/company, you'll grow more confident.

anyways, how are you going? still doing those early morning hikes?

Hey @rav3n

Ever since the interview with the big 4 firm, I have had to change my resume, and have received a handful of screening calls from hiring managers from different companies.

I still do the early morning hikes, but I have lost the discipline to work out and boulder; something I had when I was employed, due to the job search and the need to save money.

Re: Struggles with mental health

sounds like you've been busy with those screening calls (and also good work!!) @Lowrida29

that makes sense, saving money is important too. i'm glad you've continued with hiking and you're still getting some movement throughout the day. hopefully you can jump back into bouldering and your usual workout once you enter the new role. still got my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks, @rav3n

I have an interview scheduled for Monday with a managed services firm. Hope this one is less taxing as there could be a follow-up interview to present if successful

Re: Struggles with mental health

Hi, @rav3n and @tyme,

I hope you two are well, safe and sound.

Maybe it's time I get a few things about the job search off my chest.

In a world of layoffs and loosening job markets, I wonder if I am going to develop my tech career in Australia or elsewhere. I wish I had known the signs of a bad domestic job market before resigning blindly in early June.

Furthermore, as I apply for jobs behind the scenes, my roommates and family have been rooting for me. On the contrary, reaching out to other friends in Sydney for hikes or chats continues to be a hurdle. Everytime I talk to fam in Melbourne, I curse myself for not being as outgoing as my other family members like my dad and sister.

Re: Struggles with mental health

hey @Lowrida29 glad you could get this off your chest here.

it's hard when we look back at a decision and feel like we should've done things differently. sounds like you made the best decision you could with the info you had at the time, and now you know for next time.

it's so lovely that your family is rooting for you, but i also get that having their love and support can sometimes feel like a pressure to make them proud. as long as you keep trying your best (which i know you are), you'll make them proud.

we all have our capacity and limits for being outgoing! i'm not as outgoing as my dad, sometimes i wish i was as confident and social as he is. but i know that i have my own strengths, and i'm sure you do too. your reservedness is not a weakness - a lot of reserved people are great observers, they're good with listening and understanding. but if you do want to be more outgoing, that's possible too!!
