Struggles with mental health

Here’s a thoughtful, honest, and impactful message you can post on the SANE Forum, striking a balance between vulnerability, self-awareness, and your desire to be understood:

Title: Struggling with Depth, Disconnection, and Emotional Exhaustion

Hi everyone,

I’ve been sitting with a lot of conflicting thoughts lately, and I wanted to share them here because I’m tired of being misunderstood or told to "just be positive." I’ve always been someone who feels things deeply—pain and frustration with life and status as a temp migrant. I have a strong inner world, and sometimes it feels like that makes me an outlier.

I’m surrounded by people who say they care, but I often feel like a miniscule group of people genuinely listens without trying to fix me or judge me. I cherish those rare friendships, but I also feel drained—mentally and emotionally—especially when I'm expected to be cheerful. I have been contemplating a job change, but the uncertainty surrounding my visa status is hurting my prospects.

I’m an introvert, I connect with dark music, and I’ve had a history of feeling like an outsider since I was born. Some days, I want to isolate and beat myself, while other days, I crave being heard without having to put on a mask.

I don’t know what this all adds up to—burnout, depression, existential fatigue? All I know is I feel emotionally raw, and I’m looking for a space where people won’t downplay that or tell me to just “look on the bright side.”

If you relate, or have any words, I’d really appreciate it. I’m not expecting a fix or a new job—just maybe a moment of human connection that feels real.

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day/night.

I think for me, I quickly learnt that we need to consider holistic care when trying to manage one part of us @Lowrida29

Not sure if you've heard about the 'gut' being the second brain. So it seems like our physical health affects our mental health, and like the body can get sick, so can the mind.

In the past, when I don't sleep or exercise, my mental health really suffers.

Your past times are so unique. How often do you go bouldering?

In response to: Re: Struggles with mental health

Re: Struggles with mental health

I try to boulder at least once a week. Twice a week is a bonus if I don't have plans.

Despite working out and bouldering, I need to find more ways to stay fit to counteract the sedentary lifestyle. Apologies for the overthinking

Re: Struggles with mental health

hey @Lowrida29 how'd your catch up on friday go?

yeah with mental and physical health, i do find that i need a balance and variety. my sleep was a BIG one, something i'm still working on improving. but i also felt that doing a creative activity alongside the exercise/movement activities helped heaps with my mental health and overall wellbeing. i can't draw or paint or dance or sing well, but i do them anyways because its fun when there's no pressure.

what other ways of 'staying fit' were you looking into? physical activities or non-physical ones too?

Hi @rav3n

It went well. We had dinner and went on a walk.

However, I broke down on occasions where I mentioned self harm, my thoughts about wronging her while opening up and my troubles maintaining my friendship with her. After that, she suggested catching up with a GP later this week to seek professional help and resolve a dysregulated nervous system.

I have scheduled a short appointment with a mental health GP at a uni practice. I hope I can get some of the answers whilst being at peace with myself and my friendships.

Coming back to your other question, I would want to journal and perform CBT until I meet a psychologist. Also, I want to write rap songs and spoken words. But, recent struggles have been hampering me to do so.

@Lowrida29 dinner and walk sounds so lovely.

she sounds like a good friend, and i'm glad you were able to unmask and be honest about your emotions with her. sometimes i feel uncomfortable when i cry and break down but after it, i feel better for getting it out of my system. i hope the release felt good for you.

wowww you've booked an appointment already!! proud of you for getting that done!! i've got my fingers crossed that the appointment goes smoothly for you.

ooo those are good strategies to trial out for sure. if you're interested, Lifeline has some journalling prompts to guide writing: Journaling your thoughts & feelings (the questions are at the bottom). i like having guides sometimes, or else i don't know where to start with the writing.

rap songs is so cool, have you tried writing songs before?? i used to do it as a kid but lately i've been wanting to try writing songs again too. do you listen to a lot of rap?

Re: Struggles with mental health

Fingers crossed, @rav3n. I believe it's the last roll of the dice as a means of slithering out of the survivalist mindset. Also, I will check out the journalling guide in a bit

I listen to a lot of rap, @rav3n. I want to get to a point where I can write and spit bars with other friends in English and my mother tongue.

Re: Struggles with mental health

@Lowrida29 do you like reading? because before i started therapy, i read some poems and self-help books that made me feel seen. sometimes those books understood me better than my family.

oo i love rap too! omg that'd be so cool, rapping in english and your mother tongue! there's a south asian artist called hanumankind and he raps in english and an indian language called malayalam - and even his english rapping incorporates his indian culture. sorry for rambling about this haha i just get so excited when i see people combining their cultures. do your friends rap too? do you all practice rapping on the spot?

In response to: Re: Struggles with mental health

Re: Struggles with mental health

@rav3n, I have heard of Hanumankind and have bumped some of his tracks. There is a Malaysian Indian rapper named Yogi B that raps in English and Tamil, and I also bump a few tracks of a KL based group called K Town Clan.

Btw, I have some news to share, I have just handed in my 4 week notice without landing a job offer, due to the stress and stagnant nature of work. Although I have done the right thing, I would need enough support to get through a tumultuous period, @rav3n

Re: Struggles with mental health

ooo i actually have heard of Yogi B too! haven't fully listened to his songs, but i've seen lil clips. i'm so used to seeing Bollywood romance songs everywhere so it's nice to see other varieties like Indian rap songs. @Lowrida29 i haven't heard of K Town Clan before but i will check it out!

wow, thanks for sharing with me!! how are you feeling about giving your notice? change and uncertainty can feel scary, but it also sounds like this decision was important and necessary for you. did you chat to your friend about it too? also, proud of you for looking after yourself and we're here for you 💙

Re: Struggles with mental health

Thanks, @rav3n.

My siblings have been heavily supportive and have been watching out for me, despite initial shock and awe [edited by moderator]

Change and uncertainty are scary, and there are rumours about a slow and inactive job market, so being scheming and calculating can help me seal another job.
