Therapy Efficiency

Therapy Efficiency

Hi all,

Has anyone gone through EMDR for C-PTSD and past trauma or CBT for harmful behaviours. Was it effective/ineffective.

I've been told I could be looking at anything between 2-5yrs to address my issues. That's a long time and probably a lot of $$$'s, too.

TIA

Re: Therapy Efficiency

Hi @Ed1975

I am doing EMDR at the moment and have done CBT in the past.

I have past traumas and c-ptsd. I've also got harmful behaviours.

I found cbt to be helpful. At the time I didn't think it did much and ad in my brain that it wouldn't help. But looking back, I do believe it did help me.

I started emdr last year with my psychologist. I have found it has helped with some of my past traumas. I will say this however, it is very hard to do and extremely triggering for me. I have persisted with it because I have noticed a change.

With both emdr and cbt, they are going to have different effects on us, since we are all different.

I don't believe that they are a magical cure, that all my problems will just disappear. But I do believe that they both have made an impact on my mental health. I guess any little bit is better than nothing.

Oh another thing. When I did CBT I actually did it in a group setting. It was linked to a mental health hospital that I had been a patient at. I'm not sure if there would have been a bigger difference doing in individually, but maybe that might be an option to save some $$

I hope this helps

I have spent a LOT of money on various therapies all my life. I am from poor socioeconomic background and have to be very careful with funds. @Ed1975

It’s a great question. Short answer. Some do, some don’t. Depends on capacity of individual therapists to develop adequate rapport with the individual client.

eg., I had a lady pushing EMDR but fail in developing rapport, beyond boasting she did supervision. I never did her therapy. I am an old dog and been about the traps for a while. I have a big T trauma background. She should have worked harder for the price she charged.

Not saying it’s not a good fit for you.

@Appleblossom @Snowie

My issue is that only 3% of psychologists are trained in treating my behaviours. I'm specifically looking for someone who deals in psychosexual therepy. I've had a number of them say, "I know a bit about... etc..." but I feel I'd be throwing my money away on someone who can't address my trauma driven issues. I don't want to get $1000's of dollars in to realize they're not helping.

It's frustrating.

It's hard finding that psych that can help @Ed1975 and are qualified with what we need. Took me a long time to find my psych.

I hope the search isn't for too much longer.

I am hearing you about those areas of therapy. @Ed1975 Important work needs to be done in those areas to address the many issues and confusions reigning at the moment. Wishing you luck. I also mentioned ideas on your other thread.

imho therapists … sometimes jump on therapy bandwagons like they are going out of style… humans have not changed that quickly… although there are many valuable insights from many therapies. My best bet is to use more than one…. None of them are … cure alls…
