Talking through trauma and PTSD

Acceptance is hard work

Acceptance is hard work

Before I start, I just want to say…that I don’t feel comfortable in this space. It’s hard to be in the trauma and PTSD forum, but for me at the moment, I’m working through a level of acceptance.

I don’t have a diagnosis, I’ve never spoken to or seen a counsellor, or received any kind of mental health support. I have a very good friend who works in a healing space and has seen and experienced the impact my mental health and my triggers has on me. She has a lived experience of CPTSD and she knows a little of my story. She has helped me with resources and just by being a wonderful safe space for me to talk about what I’m experiencing. She suggested that perhaps, I could be experiencing the symptoms of CPTSD.

I completed a self-referral for the guided recovery program and have started that process. It has me straddling the line of acceptance. I have always had “anxiety” and have experienced panic attacks and flash backs and all of those good things. My first memories of my anxiety was when I was a teenager. But now, I accept that it isn’t entirely accurate.

My brain’s blocked out some of my memories of what happened to me. Logically, I know that it happened, but it was as if…if I couldn’t remember it all, then maybe I could live with doubt and maybe that doubt was permission to say…”you know what? Maybe It’s not real.” And if it didn’t really happen, then I don’t have CPTSD.

I will also acknowledge that I have been fairly avoidant with seeking help for a number of reasons, but one of those reasons is because I don’t want to talk about/acknowledge that what happened, actually happened.

I’m in a space at the moment where I know that the first step for me is actually owning it and accepting it. But, that makes me feel very vulnerable, and the acceptance feels “slippery,” I can’t quite wrap my head around it, as if a part of me is protecting me from it, if that makes sense.

Last year, a friend (who is no longer a friend) told me in an argument that I use my anxiety “as an excuse” and maybe she’s right - but not in the context she meant it. I’ve used my anxiety as an excuse not to acknowledge that there’s something else behind it. Is acceptance something that you let happen organically as you move through life, and counselling and all the processes? Or is this something that you push yourself through, knowing that it’s an important step? How do you work through this process of arriving at acceptance on multiple levels?

@Jynx @rav3n @tyme and I don’t know who else to tag, I’m sorry.

@NightFury sorry to hear things are a bit rough and shaky sweet. Definitely be gentle with your wonderful self sweetheart, sending lots of love and hugs ❤️.

Things are tough over here but I'm just doing the best i can. I'm going to put a roast beef in the oven 😋.

A roast beef sounds lovely @MissGremlin

The psychology clinic rang me this morning to inform me that my psychologist's last day with the clinic is next week, so rescheduling my appointment might be hard. She's put me on the list if any cancellations come up. But I also had to ring the clinic my psychologist is moving to and set up my paper work and appointments there. If I can't get in next week I'll have to wait a month to see her in the new clinic.

I've cleaned my bathroom and my aim today is try and get my washing under control. It's rained here pretty much for two weeks straight so I have washing from last weekend still on the line. I'll need to get that in and rewash it.

So things have been kinda stressing me out this morning.

I might make a cuppa shortly and take a breath.

@NightFury oh that's really tough that she's finishing up at that clinic next week, I'm hoping that you're able to get an appointment there before she leaves as a month is a long time to wait. So proud of you for making that phone call to the new clinic sweet.

Ugh the rain makes getting the washing done hard, just do what you can sweet. You've done well for getting your bathroom clean. You actually reminded me that I need to do a load of washing too so I better do that now.

I can understand why it's stressing you out. Taking a breather and having a cuppa sounds like a perfect idea and maybe sneak in some Luna cuddles.

I can't do anything but wait and see now. @MissGremlin I have six appointments at the new clinic booked, the paper work is done. I just have to wait and see whether I get in next week.

The weather is supposed to be okay for the next few days, so I'm trying to get as much washing done as I can.

I'm just making a coffee now. I think I might go and get a pie for lunch later. Maybe a little sweet treat too and then spend the afternoon watching TV or something.

My assignment can wait until tomorrow. I have Sunday and Monday to do it. Do you have plans for today?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@NightFury it's great that you have some appointments booked in, just hoping you can get in before she moves.

That sounds like a good plan, hoping the weather stays ok for you.

We almost got to have a cuppa together, I'd just finished an iced coffee when you said it. Going out for a pie and maybe a little sweet treat sounds perfect to me, and then relaxing with the TV or something is great self care.

We still have our Lego sets to do too, though there's no rush there. Did you see the new ones that have come out? I was eyeing off the shrek and donkey one and also the new stitch one.

The assignment can definitely wait, let today be a you day other than the bits you've done and some washing. I'm just about to do some diamond art while the roast is cooking and the washing is in.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

We do have our lego to do. @MissGremlin we could do some of that today? If you're up for it?

We haven't had a cuppa together for a while, so maybe we do lego and have a cuppa this arvo.

I also brought this for myself to build sometime soon...

I haven't really looked at the new lego sets because I know that I'd want to buy them. Money is kinda tight at the moment and lego is expensive.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@NightFury we could definitely do that later this afternoon ☺️.

I reckon it sounds perfect to me!

Oohhh i have a capybara to build like that, I did start it but haven't got around to finishing it yet.

Totally understand that. I thought about putting them on lay-by but even then I don't really have the money to spare.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I've been out and brought a pie and a vanilla slice donut for lunch @MissGremlin back home now to eat it.

I've started sorting the pieces of the unicorn. It looks like it's going to be tough to build.

I'm trying really hard not to spend money on things that aren't essentials at the moment. Paying for psychology appointments and bills and rent and the basic life stuff is tight at the moment. And I recognise that spending money on things to make me feel good is a bit of a problem for me. It's hard though.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@NightFury I'm glad you got out to get some yummy things to eat, i haven't had a vanilla slice for years.

They are definitely a bit different to Lego and maybe a bit trickier, I just lost focus in doing mine at the time.

The cost of living has gone up so much that it's making it hard to spend money on anything other than the essentials.
