Hi guys,

It’s so easy to focus on negative things. I thought it might be fun to have a place to put some happy memories from when we were kids.

I will start, when I was 4 we had a lovely garden. I remember putting flower petals from roses into water and telling my Mum it was rose perfume.

What a nice idea @Oaktree

I could really use some happy memories right now. One that i remember was in tech studies in year 9. Now I was never really one to speak up in class, I always sat in a corner and kept to myself. It was during this class when we were having a class discussion and the teach asked the class what the definition of 'light' was. Without even thinking i just blurted out "Something you can see in the dark." Everyone laughed and the teacher was impressed. It felt good. I had spoken up and hadn't made a fool of myself, which is what had always stopped me. The teacher then asked me a few tings about what my interests were and I said "space". I was a big space and astronomy nut since I was a little kid. So he asked me a few technical questions hat i still remember. How far is an AU, and what is the distance of a parsec? I got both right. I knew the AU (distance between the Earth and the sun), and the Parsec was an educated guess with "4 light years". It's 3.26 light years. Everyone was so impressed, including the teacher. I've never forgotten it. It was one of the first times i remember just speaking up without being directly asked and got lucky enough to get asked questions on my favourite subject. It felt nice to be the centre of attention for the first time I could remember, with a room full of people listening to what what was saying.

Also, finding a $5 note on the walk to the local shops one day when I was about 10 was an awesome day as well.

@MJG017 awww i love that. Love your knowledge of space, it never ceases to amaze me 😊.

I remember finding $20 by a tree once when I was about 10 as i was waiting for the bus, got so excited and went and spent it at Flinders on lollies 😂.

@MissGremlin

If i remember that's exactly what I spent my $5 on... a $5 bag of mixed lollies. Which was quite a haul back then... you could pick and choose.

@MJG017 yes when money actually went a long way. I remember the school canteen you could get a full bag of lollies for like 50 cents.

One of my first happy memories was in kinda. My first time painting. I went to a tiny kinda, there was me and 3 others in my grade. The art area was sectioned off from the main class, we would put on our smocks and then the teacher would pour out some paints and we would make butterfly's by putting blobs on a page and folding it. I was always fascinated by how the colours would smush and blend together.

I rarely got to be creative at home and loved all the fun stuff I got to make and experiment at school.

Letting myself remember good times has always been hard for me, it gets lost in all the other stuff. Thanks for making this thread. Not every was bad, there were bits of good in there too, we have to hold onto those things.

I have such fond memories of school holidays spent at my pops house on the west coast of tassie. It was about a 3-4hr drive to get there but we always had a competition to see who could see poppy’s hills first.
Over the back fence of pops house was a beautiful creek that ran through town and during the summer holidays we would use the rocks to bank up the creek as much as we could to make swimming holes. Then during winter and heavy rain the creek would flood up to the back of pops fence.
Pop did a lot of wood work and we use to love going out in the shed and playing in the saw dust. I still love the smell of huon pine.
We often watched old family movies, slide shows and listen to pop tell stories of times gone by. Stews and dinners cooked on the inside fire place and the sound of his big old clock on the mantle piece.
I wish my daughter had the chance to know him. He actually passed 24yrs ago today.

I remember finger painting at kindergarten. I did my Mum’s curly hair.

I really enjoyed that.

Great thread Oak, gosh I have a few happy memories. Spending time with my grandparents was the best. When I was in my teens my Nana and I would have a nap in the afternoon, but before we went to sleep she would tell me about growing up in Carnarvon during WW2. I wish I had written her stories down as I only remember a couple now.
When we lived in Melbourne I used to hide in the nasturtium patch. It reached the 6 foot fence and mum has a photo of me, this tiny wee 3 year old surrounded by orange and green.

I'd love to hear other stories of childhood too ❤️

When I was 9 I lived in a flat. There was a mint bush there. Every Sunday I would go pick some mint and make my own mint sauce. I love the smell of mint
