Shoulder to Shoulder: Veterans

START HERE: Welcome!

START HERE: Welcome!

Hello and Welcome to the new SANE Forums Veteran Space!

We are very excited to be able to build a community for Veterans to connect with their peers and explore the similarities and differences in each member’s military experience.

This is YOUR space, and we sincerely hope that it can be a welcoming, supportive and safe space to both give and receive peer support, and to lift each other up.

We are excited to get to know each of you, and to kick this off, we would love to invite you to introduce yourself here by clicking the “Reply” button on this post.

Or, you might be ready to jump right in and introduce yourself by creating your own discussion thread!

Re: START HERE: Welcome!

Okay cool good to know.

I am interested what does SANE offer for veterans. Especially younger veterans, cause when I got out I can tell you their wasn't much out there to help the younger guys. You all of a sudden had no job so no purpose, you instantly lost your crew and the drift begins. And to this day I have no seen any service help younger veterans re-build a crew. Nothing to help younger people meet other younger people and build the vital support structures. Plenty with full with the older veterans (and that great) but noting targeted at the younger guys. All they have is a pension, no purpose and boredom, then they wonder why their mental health tanks.

Re: START HERE: Welcome!

Okay so I posted this days ago and got no response.

So I assumed that means the answer is nothing. Good to confirm that anyway, reallys confirms that there is no help out there for us or my other mates that out now.

Probably too much wasted money in programs like this the do absolutely nothing.

Re: START HERE: Welcome!

Hi @FormerArmy

I'm really sorry to hear that and can understand how that would feel disheartening - especially when you've taken the step to reach out. I can promise you that your voice here matters and it wasn't intentional that you weren't replied to.

To answer your previous post - SANE's Shoulder to Shoulder space is primarily a peer-support Forum. It's a place for veterans and their families to connect with others who understand that transition, share experiences, and rebuild some sense of community and connection.

You mentioned not seeing services that actively help younger veterans rebuild a crew. What do you think would make something like that actually work? Your perspective is valuable here.

If you haven't already, I would encourage you to check out Open Arms, which has a range of specialised services to provide the support and care you need, with staff who understand veteran and military culture. This could allow you to find a supportive service in addition to the Forums space.

We really value you as a member here, and I promise thar your voice matters to us.

Re: START HERE: Welcome!

Hey @FormerArmy ,

Sorry you feel unheard and unsupported.

What does support look like for you? What are you hoping to receive?

I hear how hard it is for you, as a young person, to find meaning and purpose.

The forums are designed for connection with others who have been impacted by mental health. Feel free to venture onto other threads too.

What are some of your interests so I can better direct you to threads.

Some people want to connect and have a laugh, others want to share their story, others want to write as a way of finding meaning, others share art work.

What do you think would be helpful for you?

Re: START HERE: Welcome!

Hello.

I'm Ex Navy, left 14 years ago, I have tried to connect to various services, groups or supports but the barriers put up make it impossible whether is the times the group gathers, during standard business hours ( making to difficult due to work commitments), the induction process making it unfairly to difficult to join varies programs. I was hoping this would be different but looking at the board and times it seems a little bit of a ghost town. Is any one aware of a more active group, service or support that operates outside the standard business hours and possibly in WA that I might be able to look at.

Thank you
