Welcome and getting started

Panic attack

Panic attack

I had my first panic attack yesterday morning. Fortunately I was at home but it came out of nowhere.

I have been struggling with my mental health for about 7 years now and the last 2 have been particularly bad but the last 3 months I have been doing really well. I have felt a massive mindset shift. That is why yesterday having a panic attack has really floored me.

I feel I am very self-aware and work on controlling my emotions when negative thoughts pop up . I listen to my body, feel my feelings and know what I am going through is temporary.

Yesterday though, the panic attack came out of nowhere. I had a great weekend, a great week then boom.

I did all the things needed to alleviate the panic and while they were working I needed to call my brother to break it.

Yesterday the exhaustion was something else. Like I had a hangover.
I’m doing okay but wanted and needed to share my experience.

Re: Panic attack

Hello @Herd8 and welcome. I'm sorry to hear that you experienced your first panic attack, they can be really scary.

It sounds like you are really in tune with your body and take care of yourself really well when it comes to your mental health. Panic attacks are just one of those things that can sneak up on us with no warning but the fact that you did all you could and reached out for support is amazing and you should be really proud of yourself.

It's completely normal to feel exhausted after, they take alot of your body. How are you feeling today?

Thankyou for sharing your experience, please know you are not alone and we are here for you.

Re: Panic attack

@MissGremlin I didn’t realise it was normal to feel so exhausted after an attack until I googled it.
I am still feeling out of sorts today. Teary, fidgety , dizzy and short of breath but am staying home to rest and monitor.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Re: Panic attack

@Herd8 staying home to rest sounds like a good idea. Taking care of yourself and practising some self care can really help, doesn't have to be big things even just having a warm drink and sitting somewhere comfy, listening to music or watching something you enjoy.

Have you got any supports that you can talk to about what happened, maybe a gp or psychologist/counsellor?

Re: Panic attack

@MissGremlinI will go and see my gp as I’m a little concerned with the lightheadedness and would like to talk to her about it. I also have an awesome counsellor .

@Herd8 sounds like a good idea and I'm glad you have an awesome counsellor. Have you had enough to eat and drink? Have you been able to get some sleep?

Re: Panic attack

Hey @Herd8 ,

Thanks for sharing.

I hear that panic attacks can come out of nowhere. Please don't feel like you've done anything wrong.

Good on you for reaching out.

One thing that can help is learning to control your breathing. Do you have a therapist you can work with on ways to harness the power of your breath?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re: Panic attack

@tyme thanks for checking in.
Agree, working on my breathing really helped to get me to the point I was able to call my brother.
It is something though I need to be more mindful of if there is a next time.

Re: Panic attack

Unfortunately, with panic attacks, there's no warning sometimes @Herd8

So what I do is I regularly practice mindfulness to control my breathing and when I feel my heart start to race because of anxiety/panic/anger, I go straight to working on my breath again so that I am in control of the situation.

How are you feeling now?

Another thing you can do is maybe keep a log/track of when it happens? You might find some trends?
