Feeling helpless

Feeling helpless

My 40yo son lives with anxiety and depression. There have been lots of ups and downs over the last 20 years but now it’s the worst it’s been. He just rang again saying he can’t live in the flat I provide for him any longer. He wants me to buy somewhere in the country as he’s having trouble with noise from the upstairs neighbours. I just can’t do it. He’s angry with me saying that I haven’t thought this through properly. He says there’s no point seeing a GP that my daughter has sourced for him as it’s his housing that needs fixing and he won’t be able to do that. He can’t seem to see that there’s a lot more that needs addressing. I said I realised I was putting him a difficult position. It’s a mess and I feel so sad and scared. When I can’t give him hope he gets angry and ends the phone call. He does say he loves me but it’s all so hard. I asked him if I could speak to the tenants upstairs but he says it’s pointless. I think I should. I’m just going round in circles, what a mess. The last tenants left but this can’t keep happening-I had hoped that them leaving would have calmed the issue down. I know many of you are dealing with a lot worse with people you care for. I’m lucky that I have a supportive husband (not my son’s Dad), daughter and friends. Just needing to share I think, thank you.

Hey @Annie17 ,

Sorry to hear about what you are going through at the moment. I read you were torn between caring for him and your own needs.

Have you been to the flat to see what the level of the noise is? For what I've read, you can test/record the decibels of the sound and make a complaint if needed. But out of courtesy, it's probably better you speak to them first.

OR, do you think it is his MH that is exacerbating the noise? I hear there is a lot going on for him.

Please know you are not alone in this. I can see you are doing a lot for him already - including providing in a roof over his head. But at some stage, I guess he needs to be accountable (if he is cognitively able)?

Thoughts?

Re: Feeling helpless

Thank you so much for your prompt response.

All that you’ve said makes sense. I think that his poor mental health does make noise that many of us would be able to manage worse for him. Having said that if I was at home all the time as he is there may come a point where it would be a problem for me.
I don’t know if the noise levels would be considered unacceptable. I have been there and I can’t always hear the noises he points out (I am a little deaf though).
I’ve contacted my daughter and she has made a GP appointment for him. She plans to speak to him about this tomorrow. Even though he’s resistant I think it has to be a starting point for what you describe as him taking some accountability.
He is cognitively able but I think I haven’t helped him be strong in being accountable-maybe I’ve been too protective.

I know he tries but he feels let down by the medical system, society and me. I will always be there for him. I just can’t always do what he wants me to. Thanks again for listening.

Re: Feeling helpless

Well done on setting your boundaries @Annie17 .

To be honest, I wonder if his MH is making the noise louder than what it really is? Another option is the use of Loops for noise sensitivity.

From my own experience, if I'm having a crappy day, even the sound of a dripping tap is enough to set me off.

It may be helpful to support your son to record the 'loudness' of the noise so he can show himself or you the result?

I hope you find the courage to keep those boundaries.

Alternatively, if it is really troubling him, would he consider looking for a place himself? That will support with responsibility and accountability too?

If any of the above is not on track, please disregard it. I'm only throwing this out there in case something sparks your attention.

I've worked with a lot of people who need that little bit of additional support, and one of the biggest takeaways is that our role is to empower them to make choices to support themselves.
