@Bunniekins i give my wife (and also the kids accepting and loving her as they did,) the honour here. It was her loving heart that responded to the newspaper add. And my wife has surely done all the leg work, especially after i became so unwell soon after we adopted her.
(Truly the adoption process unlocked my suppressed trauma memories, and ended my up to then well hidden mental illness, for i understood my illness as a spiritual issue not mental. Which ended me up with a major mental break and a series of major psychoses 3 1/2 years later. (At the time i was working as a youth worker with troubled youth.))
As far as i'm concerned, apart of figuring her out, especially when she first came into our home, for she suffered from bad P.T.S.D related behaviours, i have done very little but enjoy her as our daughter.
For at first she kept constantly running away. Or hid terrified in the cabinet when the kids as much as had a fight, biting her non existing nails, and pulling her hair out by the hands full. She could not cry when hurt. Badly Gnashed her teeth when sleeping, and suffered from constant nightmares. She also always thinks she is naughty when unwell. And does not like people, or animals, who are loud or noisy.
An added problem was she knew only 20 words, and would use them randomly, not knowing when they were right. Her speech is still rather poor and often only those who know her well can understand what she is telling them.
She could also hit our other kids unexpectedly, and could easily throw a small child, or even a baby, of her lap! We had to watch her with eagles eyes. For when a child, or worse a baby, begins to cry, she can not handle the stress of seeing someone distressed, and she needs to be 'rescued' big time. (Even though she loves children and babies.)
Luckily i do have very good observational skills, and know the value of not concluding too quickly. So i always managed to figured out how best deal with her behavioural issues. This is how we got around her P.T.S.D problems in the end. Me figuring out what, or how things, upset her, which we then as a family unit would love out of her.
But otherwise i have done very little real physical work, apart of freely learning to love her like my own. She is a truly a beautiful person. So very, very specially made. And i'm ever so grateful and privileged that Jesus brought her into our lives and gave us her to love as our own.
