Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Any other singles here a bit tired of having Valentines Day thrust elbow-deep down our throats at this time of year?

I’m single by choice – after 2 disastrous marriages, there’s no way I’m going to subject myself to that again. People say, “but they’re not all like that, there are good blokes out there”, and I’m sure there are. But apparently I’m a really bad judge of character, so it’s much simpler to just be with myself. Which is lucky for me, because since I’ve had 16 skin cancers hacked off my face and look like Herman Munster after a heavy weekend on the sauce, the only second glances I get from blokes these days are ones where I can SEE them thinking “holy crap, what happened to you!!?”

However, the ambivalence of the situation is that, even though I choose to be alone, it still wrecks me that I AM alone. Both those marriages were to men I loved with all my heart, and it SHOULD have worked out. I should have had a happy “normal” life with one or the other of them. I should have been able to trust them when they said “I love you” and “I do”. I should have been able to rely on their promises of loving me forever instead of having “yeah, I meant it a couple of years ago, but you’re such a pain in the a$$ now”. I worked hard to be a good wife to both of them, and it seems really unfair to me that because one of them decided that drugs (and my cousin) were much more exciting than me, and the other decided that “wife” was synonymous with “obedient slave or subject to violence”, I have to spend each February seeing “hahaha, you’re not one of those who have somebody to validate your existence by wishing to spend time with you” plastered all over the shops in hearts and flowers.

For me it’s not Valentines Day, it’s “Here are some chocolates which nobody is going to give you because you’re not important to anybody” Day. It’s “Yeah, you go to the shops and see some woman yelling at her man, belittling him in public, but even she is more worthy of love than you” Day. It’s “you can go to the RSL for lunch and see ladies putting their men’s weekly wages into the pokies, but they’re going to have somebody who loves them come home to them tonight” Day. It’s “You KNOW she’s cheating on him, but he still loves her, so what the hell is so wrong with YOU?” Day.

For me, Valentines Day is a yearly reminder that, however hard I tried, I was found unworthy of love. It’s a reminder that there are millions and millions of people out there who all have faults and flaws, just like me, but somebody still wants them in their life. Other people get to be loved unconditionally, other people are accepted for who they are, other people are found to have some redeeming factor or other which makes their loved ones love them back. And all I have is the memory of men I loved saying things like “you always nag me”, “you’ve got a fat a$$”, “yeah, so you had a Caesar, it’s been a week now, you should be back to cooking my dinner like a wife’s supposed to do”, and the classic (which, if I’m in the right mood, actually makes me laugh now), “why do you have to READ?” (yeah, his biggest complaint about me was that I like to read!)

Anyway, I hope that those of you who are loved receive the full measure of the love you deserve this Valentines. And for those of you who are single, I wish you the ability to remember that even though there may not be somebody to kiss you and give you flowers, you are WORTHY of love in full measure. And I’ll try to convince myself of that on Tuesday, too.

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Agree with you about the extravagance of celebration days @Former-Member! I made a rule for myself a long time ago that I'd have a spending limit for gifts. And I've pretty much stuck to that, and actually enjoyed being creative with gift choices on a budget, to me it makes the gifts more meaningful knowing I've put a lot of thought into it. Even when I did have someone for Valentines Days, I'd be lucky to get a card, so maybe my exes agreed with you about the overpriced stuff, too! 🙂
Independence Day turned out ok today, I hope you had a nice day, too. And next time I'll crank the Zep up good - I didn't do air guitar or Robert Plant impressions at full volume today, cos I was fencing right up on the road and the neighbours already think I'm odd, but you can be sure I will have a good go at it in the house (200meters from my closest neighbour and the stereo goes up mega, so I rock hard!) on the weekend. 🙂

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Thanks @Former-Member, I did have quite a nice day, hope you did, too. 🙂
You're right about us celebrating ourselves. I've decided that since I have nobody to celebrate me and think I'm a bit groovy, I'd better do it myself! I used to really suck at recognising good stuff in myself - spent so long letting others tell me how rubbish I was that I forgot that I have a good side, too. But over the last few years, I've managed to build up a nice little list of "things that make me a bit alright", and let myself add to the list when I feel I'm justified in doing so without getting a big head! 🙂 When 15-year-old "I've been working on cars with Grandad for 6 months so I'm an expert" couldn't fix his bush basher and I did (and his mate who was there said something about "I wish my mum could fix my car"), I added it to the list. When the farm I worked at held a visitor's day, and I catered for 40 people's lunches, and was complimented for it, I let "can cook ok" onto the list. Every time my beautiful border collie sits/lays/stays when she's asked and then lays her head in my lap with those lovely eyes adoring me, I add "training animals with love" as a good thing I can do. When I crank the tunes up on a Friday night without the kids, and sing along, I tick "got up the guts to go get singing lessons, and now I can sing!" on the list. I'm getting better at celebrating myself, though I might need to give myself more time to really believe some stuff. But I'm getting there.
Happy Independance Day to you, too. 🙂

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

haha, I call myself "Frankie" cos of my "Frankenface", a bit of a play on the Frankenstein thing. I've had about 16 skin cancers cut off my face in the last 5 years (gotta have 2 more cut off my nose really soon), and since the face is a relatively small area, mine is mostly scars now. Every time I have surgery and have to go to the shops with stitches (and one time, even staples!) all over the place, all the little kiddies get scared ("Mummy, what's wrong with that lady's face!!?") so I've taken to calling myself Freaky Frankie. I'm only 41 and it's a bit of a struggle to lose relatively young what little good looks I started with, so I have to try to use my over-abundant weird sense of humour to try to lighten the situation for myself. Kinda like, well, if I'm gonna be a bit freaky, I'll embrace it and call myself that. Have you seen Pitch Perfect? Where one of the girls, a fuller-figure lady, calls herself Fat Amy so as to get in before others do? Yeah, same kind of principle. 🙂
