Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Any other singles here a bit tired of having Valentines Day thrust elbow-deep down our throats at this time of year?

I’m single by choice – after 2 disastrous marriages, there’s no way I’m going to subject myself to that again. People say, “but they’re not all like that, there are good blokes out there”, and I’m sure there are. But apparently I’m a really bad judge of character, so it’s much simpler to just be with myself. Which is lucky for me, because since I’ve had 16 skin cancers hacked off my face and look like Herman Munster after a heavy weekend on the sauce, the only second glances I get from blokes these days are ones where I can SEE them thinking “holy crap, what happened to you!!?”

However, the ambivalence of the situation is that, even though I choose to be alone, it still wrecks me that I AM alone. Both those marriages were to men I loved with all my heart, and it SHOULD have worked out. I should have had a happy “normal” life with one or the other of them. I should have been able to trust them when they said “I love you” and “I do”. I should have been able to rely on their promises of loving me forever instead of having “yeah, I meant it a couple of years ago, but you’re such a pain in the a$$ now”. I worked hard to be a good wife to both of them, and it seems really unfair to me that because one of them decided that drugs (and my cousin) were much more exciting than me, and the other decided that “wife” was synonymous with “obedient slave or subject to violence”, I have to spend each February seeing “hahaha, you’re not one of those who have somebody to validate your existence by wishing to spend time with you” plastered all over the shops in hearts and flowers.

For me it’s not Valentines Day, it’s “Here are some chocolates which nobody is going to give you because you’re not important to anybody” Day. It’s “Yeah, you go to the shops and see some woman yelling at her man, belittling him in public, but even she is more worthy of love than you” Day. It’s “you can go to the RSL for lunch and see ladies putting their men’s weekly wages into the pokies, but they’re going to have somebody who loves them come home to them tonight” Day. It’s “You KNOW she’s cheating on him, but he still loves her, so what the hell is so wrong with YOU?” Day.

For me, Valentines Day is a yearly reminder that, however hard I tried, I was found unworthy of love. It’s a reminder that there are millions and millions of people out there who all have faults and flaws, just like me, but somebody still wants them in their life. Other people get to be loved unconditionally, other people are accepted for who they are, other people are found to have some redeeming factor or other which makes their loved ones love them back. And all I have is the memory of men I loved saying things like “you always nag me”, “you’ve got a fat a$$”, “yeah, so you had a Caesar, it’s been a week now, you should be back to cooking my dinner like a wife’s supposed to do”, and the classic (which, if I’m in the right mood, actually makes me laugh now), “why do you have to READ?” (yeah, his biggest complaint about me was that I like to read!)

Anyway, I hope that those of you who are loved receive the full measure of the love you deserve this Valentines. And for those of you who are single, I wish you the ability to remember that even though there may not be somebody to kiss you and give you flowers, you are WORTHY of love in full measure. And I’ll try to convince myself of that on Tuesday, too.

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Hi @FreakyFrankie,

years ago when I was single, I believed that I would never find a partner and that I would never experience true love.

I decided just to love myself, nurture myself and do all I could to enjoy some 'romance' even though I was all alone.

One Valentine's day, I went to see a romantic movie, all by myself. I then made myself a romantic picnic lunch with Champagne, cheese and dessert and ate it under a tree in the park. I vowed to love myself always.

Not long after that, I met my now husband! I was 40 years old and I thought I would be alone forever.

I was, unfortunately, also attracted to men who were not good for me; I was a bad judge of character, like yourself. The good news is that you can learn to be a better judge of the people you meet and you can learn to be more cautious, too.

It does take time. Maybe just focus on maintaining good friendships and see what develops. I think it's always better to be alone than in bad company.

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

@FreakyFrankie I'm sorry to hear this is such a tough time of year for you. I tend to feel that way about Christmas. Valentine's Day has no relevance to me at all. The only romantic relationship I have ever had was when I was 14-16 years old and a 32 year old church leader took a "special interest" in me. The only valentine's day card I have ever received was from him...it became evidence in a court case So nope, Tuesday will be just another day for me.

Of course, that doesn't make YOU feel any better, or take away your painful feelings around this time of the year. I wish there was something I could say to make it hurt a bit less, but I don't think there is. Happily, all of those extra difficult days such as Valentine's day, Christmas etc. only last for 24 hours and then they pass. I know I always feel kind-of relieved at mid-day on Christmas day - half-way there! I hope you are able to do something extra special for yourself on Tuesday.

@Sahara, I'm so glad you could find yourself a good one! I agree with you - I'd much rather be alone than in bad company. I have no friends, and even if I did, I have no interest any more in anything developing. I've vowed to myself that I will be alone for the rest of my days. I'm ok with that, just sometimes it hurts that I've had to resign myself to loneliness......

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

@Phoenix_Rising - Wow, you've just given me a whole bunch of perspective there. Thanks Phoenix, nothing like hearing about somebody's horrid experience to make me realise things could certainly have been worse for me! So sorry you had to go through that, I hope you're ok. Christmas is always horrible for me, too, and I do that sigh of relief when it's over, too. I always manage to get past all the "celebration" dates - and there are quite a lot that trigger me - and I'm sure I'll survive Valentines again this year. 🙂

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Hi @FreakyFrankie

So...have you come up with any plans to make tomorrow a bit less yuck? As I said, I can't really relate to struggling with Valentines' day...but regarding Christmas, I have created my own tradition. Last Christmas was the nineteenth one that I've spent alone so I kind-of have a handle on it now, and it isn't nearly as difficult as it used to be. I will sometimes joke to people that I have a Christmas family tradition, just without the family bit . I wonder if there is something you can do to make Valentine's day a bit more ok???

Oh and by the way, the fact that I have an icky history around Valentine's day in no way makes the slightest difference to the struggle that you are having with it. I know I super hate it when someone tries to do the "there's always someone worse off than you" thing to me, so I really hope that in sharing my story, I didn't in any way minimise your struggle. Your pain is your pain and the experiences of others really have little relevance to that. Hang in there - in twenty-eight hours the obnoxious day will be over for another year

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

@Phoenix_Rising - I've decided that I will spend today as Independence Day instead. 🙂

I will celebrate all the good things about being single. The fact that I can cook what I want without an ungrateful twit complaining that I put "leaves" in the spag bol. (The kids know better than to complain now, or I give them the "you could always have a vegemite sandwich instead" look...). The fact that I can watch what I want on TV, no more "this movie has no purpose other than to blow up as many cars as possible" nights. I can read in bed without someone complaining that the miniscule light from my ebook is keeping him awake. I can watch Big Bang Theory without someone getting upset cos he doesn't understand "all the big words" and taking it as a personal insult that I do. I can go 3 days without shaving my legs. I can conserve water by doing the washing when there's a full load, instead of him washing towels with clothes and ending up with fluff all over my black shirts. I can blast Led Zeppelin as loud and as often as I like without being told that "only druggos listen to that music".

I've decided that being single is awesome. I made Valentines cards for my sons, and got one back from my 5-year-old telling me he loves me "all the way up to space". (With some dubious illustrations that look like bottoms, but he tells me are hearts 😄 ) And now I'm going to go do some work fencing a paddock for the sheep, cows and pony that I wanted to buy, and raise without the "gotta be tough with 'em and show 'em who's boss" method ruining the beautiful loving friendships I have with my beasties. Cos I can and don't need a bloke to tell me what to do or how to do it his way. While listening to Led Zep. 🙂

And Phoenix, I certainly do not think you were minimising my troubles by sharing your story. I also grit my teeth when people do the "I've had it so much worse than you, so get over it" thing. I know you weren't doing that, and thank you for NOT doing that and being understanding. I'm lucky enough, though, to be able to realise it for myself, my life of crap has luckily given me the ability to have perspective and be grateful for the good things that have happened and the bad things that could have happened to me but didn't. I've trained myself to keep an eagle-eye out for things to be grateful for, otherwise I'd have gone under long ago! Hearing and reading other people's stories is a good thing for me, it strengthens my "ways I've been lucky" list and that helps me. So thanks 🙂

I hope you have a great day.

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

I absolutely love this post @FreakyFrankie! So empowering and you made me laugh- especially about the "leaves" in the spag bol

I hear you about having Valentines Day jammed down your throat and think us single ladies need to celebrate ourselves and not be define by whether we are in a relationship or not. Celebrating Independance Day is a fabulous idea! I hope you have a good day doing your independant thing while listening to Led Zep

I hope @Phoenix_Rising and @Sahara are also having a good day and wishing all of you a happy Independance Day/Valentines Day

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

hello @FreakyFrankie @Phoenix_Rising

Just to add another ingredient in your very interesting replies, Valentines Day is another excuse for people to spend money that they cant afford on overpackaged. over marketed items.

Mothers day, fathers day, easter eggs, christmas presents lovely having the thought of wanting to give. yes i do have that but not the extravagance.

valentines day when you are at school, an anonymous card yes wonderful and that is enough. Mind you some cards these days cost an arm and a leg.

I do love that you are having an independence day. Yes!

as for Led Zeppelin turn it up please I cant hear - am bouncing around the room with my air guitar.

How about an attitude day!! ps dont tell the children though xxxx

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Hi @FreakyFrankie, Like @Former-Member, I loved your post. The bit that made me laugh most was your description of your son's card with pictures of hearts that looked like bottoms. I'm giggling again now, thinking about it . I'm so pleased to hear that you have declared Feb 14th Independence Day. I think that is awesome.

When I was out driving today, I heard on the radio that Valentine's day has been banned in Pakistan by the government. Although I recognise that there are some serious issues at play here, I confess that it made me giggle. I immediately thought of you and made a mental note to tell you that perhaps you could save up and take a trip to Pakistan next February and thus avoid the day altogether

It sounds like you had a lovely day @FreakyFrankie and I think you are awesome to have managed to reframe it into being such a positive day. Happy independence day to you

Re: Grrrr! Valentines Day!

Thanks everybody. Today was ok 🙂

The fencing hit a slight snag when I had to correct some design flaws on the mobile wire roller thing I made (damn amateur! ), but I got it sorted in the end, got some wire run out, and got some satisfaction from achievement today. Which is all I'm really after these days, so tick in that box!

@Phoenix_Rising Banned in Pakistan!? Hmm, wonder if too many single people had a whinge about it being a lonely day - gee, who'd do that? lol. I think I might skip the trip to Pakistan - I am the least adventurous person you'd ever meet - in other words I'm a big wuss when it comes to new experiences! Yeah, I'm a boring old homebody lol. So I might just stay home and make Independence Day a new tradition 🙂

For your viewing pleasure, I've included a pic of my valentines card from my son, heart-bottoms and all 😄
