historical family dysfunction that still hurts me now
Hi everyone,
I recently received a message from my niece saying she "doesn’t want to be burdened by my struggles" and that I’m "toxic." This has been incredibly painful, as I’ve never shared my feelings with her or her sisters – only with my brother. My inner critic is on a loop, and I’m questioning myself—even though I know I’m kind, compassionate, and empathetic. My nieces have meant the world to me since they were born, so hearing this from them has been devastating. I can feel myself spiralling.
For context, I’ve always felt like the odd one out in my dysfunctional family. My relationship with my parents (especially my volatile father and emotionally dependent mother) has been very different from my brother’s. As our parents age, tensions have grown – particularly around caregiving responsibilities. I’ve tried opening up to my brother, but he completely dismisses my experience, and now the rest of the family has turned against me. My brother is 7 years older than me, and my four nieces are aged between 14-30.
I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar with family estrangement or being unfairly labelled. How did you cope, and what helped you move forward?
Thanks in advance
