Talking through trauma and PTSD

Memory blocks and increasing mutual awareness

Memory blocks and increasing mutual awareness

I have DID, and have found myself switching alters a lot more frequently of late. Although some of us have the ability to be light-hearted, jovial and very self-forgiving about it, others of us are just downright frustrated. I am in digital communication with a number of my friends, and have found at times that going back on previous communications, there are messages I simply don’t recall. Even worse though, is when I don’t even understand what the message is talking about. I’m living a whole life with my friends that I’m not even privy to… and for the longest time, I didn’t even know! I’ve started trying to name my alters, and keep track of them by writing what they are feeling, etc., but it’s confusing and difficult, and in some ways I feel like an intruder into their space… but it’s my space too right?

Is anyone dealing with this kind of thing, and had any success with navigating the memory blocks, and opening up communication between alters?

Thanks 💕

Hi @Tessy

I am sorry you are having difficulties navigating this amnesia

Have you or are you having some kind of psychological treatment

Amnesia is very common in DID, in fact it is a diagnostic criteria, so know that it is part of DID and not something specific to you.

People with DID have differing awareness of their alters, some have communication with all ranging to no communication and can get to a reasonable age without being aware they have alters or DID

I'm sorry I can't offer any strategies to help communication

There may be others on the forum who can, or therapist that has experience in DID

Maybe Blue Knot Foundation has some information or talikng to someone there may help.

However, I think writing things down is a great strategy.

We understand how frustrating it is. The amnesia between different parts fronting. Building communication and talking to each other to build more awareness of each other and to be more coconscious with parts is a hard task. It's important to meet each part with curiosity compassion and kindness. The more you work to help each other the more trust will come and then the more parts will reveal themselves.
