Neurologist or psychiatrist?

Neurologist or psychiatrist?

Still struggling with involuntary lip pursing and tongue movements,

Do i have to see a neurologist to be diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia?

Waiting for my psychiatrist to call me, very upset that this could be permanent.

hey @Janice_22 i hear how scary and upsetting it is waiting to find answers, so sorry that it's been stressful for you.

i don't know much about tardive dyskinesia but i did search it up, and it appears that GPs, psychiatrists and neurologists can all be involved in the diagnoses process. you may need to speak to your GP or psychiatrist to get further information about this.

maybe others members might have more information on this.

sitting with you.

@Janice_22 it could be a side effect of medication. This can happen to some people prescribed certain types of antipsychotics, for example.

I would wait to speak to your psychiatrist if the above is the case and they might be able to switch medications for you or offer other solutions

I stopped taking the anti-psychotc end of January which is why i am very worried it is permanent, not coping well at all

i hear you, i can definitely see why you'd be worried @Janice_22 based on my google research, when caught early the chances of the symptoms being reversed/reduced is much higher - obviously i'm not a GP so i can't confirm that information - but your GP and psychiatrist could definitely give you more more answers around what to expect. are you able to chat to a GP soon?

i'm so sorry that this has happened to you, and i hope you get answers from your professional supports soon. what usually helps you feel calmer during overwhelming moments? having something to distract or calm you while you wait for answers can be helpful. we can brainstorm some ideas too if you'd like.

My psychiatrist called me, i still feel incredibly upset asked why he didn't warn me About possibility of TD 'you were on a low dose we usually give higher doses....extremely rare' excuses excuses, no apology. Suggested a medication to try for the symptoms and one of the side effects listed is actually depression which i already have. Said we could get confirmation from neurologist will call him on Monday. In the meantime all i can think is i can't live with this.I have enough problems now irreversible TD from a medication i never should have taken because i was never psychotic. I don't care how 'widely prescribed ' they are he won't acknowledge the harm it has caused me i feel my life is over.

Ugh that's so awful @Janice_22 I'm really sorry that you're going through this. I think it's totally understandable to be feeling this way, and you have every right to be angry... I'd be livid!

Sounds like this person is trying to skirt around any kind of accountability. For shame. I hope come Monday you get some good news 🤞

Do you have other mental health supports you can chat to about what's going on? You could also buzz the SANE support line (scroll down the page to find further details!) for someone to chat to - I always feel a little better after a vent, even if none of my problems are any different.

We're here with you 💜
