Talking through trauma and PTSD

Trauma

Trauma

This is my first post here. I wanted to share an incident that happened to me about a month ago.

My colleague and I were in a shop when my colleague accidentally spilled some drink on the floor while opening a bottle. I glanced at the man behind the counter, and he immediately looked visibly angry.

My colleague politely asked for some tissues to clean up the spill, but the man aggressively told us to leave the store. I told him that he shouldn't speak to customers that way, but this only made him more hostile. He started swearing at us. I was holding an open bottle of drink at the time, and in the heat of the moment, I raised it—causing some liquid to spill onto the items on the counter. This seemed to escalate things further, and the man threatened to call his "boys" to teach us a lesson. Fearing for our safety, we quickly left the store.

TW: Assault

Content/trigger warning
As we walked away, three men suddenly came running up behind us. Before I could react, one of them punched me in the face, knocking me unconscious. I didn’t see the attack coming and had no chance to defend myself. When I regained consciousness, I was in the emergency department at the hospital.

The medical staff informed me that I had suffered a tear on the right side of my upper lip, an internal cut inside my lip from the impact, and a gash on the back of my head from hitting the concrete pavement. I received two stitches on my lip and three on the back of my head.

Since then, I have been struggling emotionally. I feel violated and keep getting flashbacks of the attack. I’ve lost confidence in myself and don’t feel comfortable going out in public. I've had three sessions with my psychologist, but things still don’t feel like they’re improving.

I just wanted to share my experience and see if anyone else has gone through something similar. How did you cope?

Hey @Travler ,

I'm sorry to hear about the attack @Travler . It sounds incredibly traumatic for those involved. Did the police ever get involved in terms of who the attackers were?

I just want to say, I can relate to trauma and it certainly took more than 1 month to work through. If anything, it took years. Each time I closed my eyes, I didn't feel safe and would wake up in the night thinking something was going to happen.

Eventually, I had to 'change' things completely, move house, change how I do things etc so that my body could once again feel 'safe' in a new place.

I'm wondering if for you, it is about going to a different shop, driving/travelling a different route so that your brain learns what is safe?

For me, if I had to go back to that shop, anything that reminds me of that incident would probably stir up those fight/flight emotions and probably a panic attack.

Also, it seems what once you are out of fight/flight mode, to be able to go back to those shops, it's about training your brain to get something you 'enjoy' from that place. The more things you enjoy whilst going there may help desensitise those other feelings.

All the best. It sounds so hard.

Hugs.

hi @Travler and welcome
im sorry about what you have experienced. it sounds very scary.
trauma can take some time to work through. in all fairness 3 session arent to many. i would suggest to give it some time.
i can relate to trauma, not quite what youve experienced but its taking me quite some time to work through and to learn to manage without having a panic attack every time i opened the front door.
