My story

TW : contains mention of suicide

This is an abbreviated version of my life

I was born into a household where nothing was ‘normal’. An only child who shared same unpainted bedroom as her parents until late primary school. (Recently realised) a child of intergenerational abuse.

a child who got her own unpainted bedroom from start of high school that had no floor coverings, a room she ‘shared’ with empty cupboards from when the room was a kitchen. An 11yo who had no idea what it meant to become a teenage girl. A teenager who believed talking about all the physical changes was taboo due to a father who would say ‘that’s woman’s things, nothing to do with me and not to be talked about when I’m home’ ….. a mother who talked about bare minimum only. This level of discussing any female health related item never changed between my mum and I.

a child from 6 or 7 yo who grew to dislike her paternal grandfather due to trying to always and only do what he wanted. 9yo my dads only sibling took his own life. 12 yo my mums youngest sister died as side effect of MS. 13yo my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother died. Only death that had no impact on my MH was my paternal grandfather.

by time I was 14yo my fathers moods were becoming nasty. (Wasn’t until approx 6 years later medical evidence showed brain damage due to strokes). During following 2 years my father destroyed items of my school work, items of school uniform (he used to say was waste of time and money sending me to school, a girls place was at home and that I would never get a job.) I had golf balls thrown directly at my head, car driven directly at me and stopped only just before hitting me. I lived through mental abuse due to my father threatening to get rid of my pets if I didn’t ‘behave’ … this including crying when told not to. Approx 2 years of fully being controlled by my father. (I’m almost 62yo and still can’t cry anywhere unless am at home on my own). 14 yo child who more than once heard her mother saying she wished she was dead and talking about ending her own life.

16.5yo, will help of Police, my mum and I escaped my childhood house and were moved twice within few months due to concerns for our safety with mail sent to local Police Station.

mid 40’s, 23 December and my mum took heart attack in my arms at front door of my home and became unconscious. Next time I saw her she was lying on hospital bed in emergency department….. she had died from another heart attack. Early the following year I made full plans to end lives of my pets and me. It was not just my mum I missed, decades of being controlled had stopped. Both of these leaving me feeling totally lost. Went to local gp following day instead.

time forward approx 10years. Mid 50’s, happily married for 4.5 years and my husband diagnosed with terminal cancer. During next 4 mths he had couple near death close calls, the first being start on January. 6mths after diagnosis he took his last breath. Few months before his death his sister was verbally abusive. After his death this abuse escalated and included threats to get me sacked from my job.

Re: My story

Thank you for sharing some of your story here @Former-Member

It sounds like you have faced so many hurdles in life, I can't imagine the resilience and strength you must have shown to be here today ❤️

Re: My story

🫂 Oh @Former-Member big hugs.

4 1/2 years of happiness perhaps 10 years ago? My condolences re the loss of your dear husband.

My parents never talked about "female health" either. In fact they didn't have conversations with me about anything. I was sent outside or took refuge in reading. I was 1 of 6 siblings. I had no friends, no relationships (perhaps one brief one with someone who still sends birthday and Christmas cards). In recent years I've texted with some former work colleagues.

It felt like coercive control or maybe I was so socially and emotionally incompetent it didn't matter.

I'm glad you're making a home for yourself with your beloved cats. I trust you'll make good friends in your community. Schema therapy sounds a good fit for you - but you'll need to apply it to others, new friends and neighbours, not just working with your therapist.

I'm pretty raw after 3 hospitals in 3 1/2 weeks but offer you friendship in this forum, and look forward to your news. Take care.

Re: My story

@Dimity Some of the things you mentioned resonate with me.

currently doing homework for next session ….. each time I’m triggered, need to record the situation, feelings, reactions and how ‘healthy adult brain’ would react.

be nice to chat, much appreciated

That's absolutely okay. No pressure whatsoever.

Hugs.

Re: My story

I hope you're doing OK @Former-Member and moving ahead with your therapy homework.

I don't think I'll pursue further EMDR. I processed the incident of CSA and an assault. I don't think EMDR with its emphasis on reliving the moment is a good fit for the ongoing bullying belittlement and insults, or the social isolation and emotional neglect.

I've made a couple of appointments and tried to restart my home help, and done some chores. I'll rest now.

Take care. I hope today is a relatively good day for you.

Re: My story

I’ve been bit slack with the therapy homework @Dimity, in general I’m not motivated to do much most days.

went out for short walk earlier, should have gone out before it got so warm. Got some answers to things I needed to know for Friday morning.

dont know exactly what about EMDR that never felt comfortable. Maybe something about reliving experiences …. Maybe about having some one in my personal space.

Ive done talk therapy years ago which I found was good for me plus helped me learn things. I’ve chosen to given Schema therapy a try as it more looks at current reactions etc to things, looks at where the reaction first started and then works on changing current reactions etc to more positive. Eg traumatised child's brain reaction/thoughts changed to ‘heathy’ adult brain reactions/thoughts. Example for me is to learn to not just withdraw when some one is rude to me to calling out the behaviour (not going to be easy).

going to do other 2 jobs for the day then doing some cross stitch

Thinking of you

Re: My story

@Former-Member hope you enjoyed your cross stitch after your tasks. I haven't sewed for ages. Years ago I did needlepoint, and I've tried chicken scratch on gingham.

Seizing the moment to call out put down's won't be easy and you might have to rehearse in advance.

I'm tired. I decluttered half a bathroom cabinet, and chased up some appointments today. I can't walk far as yet and was nervous today as it was the first time I'd walked that route since being harassed 4 weeks ago the night before my surgery.

I'm not sure when I'll get back to my MH Social Worker. The gp wants me to check in next week and I'll speak to the psychiatrist.

When do you expect to hear back re your psychiatrist referral?

In response to: Re: My story

Re: My story

@Dimity The psychiatrist only works 3 days a week. Haven’t heard anything either way as yet. Next week will be approx 4 weeks since the referral, will be phoning her rooms next week and making enquiry.

I have regular 3mth appointment with my local dr, part of next appointment will be letting her know of the outcome of the referral.

doing things at your pace and keeping in contact your local dr sounds good options currently. If your MH social worker is good and has true empathy they will understand

Re: My story

@Dimity Linked to part of schema therapy, plus I feel comment made by new lawyer was inappropriate, Im thinking about sending her email.

in short, she accused me of not sharing my late husbands assets equally between his sons and myself. She made the comment without asking what assets he had. At the time my mind froze and for few days after I felt quilty. By now I’m annoyed.
