Struggling to make friends in rural australia

Struggling to make friends in rural australia

Hi, im new here and im gonna try asking for help here as im really struggling to find any other options that are working.

Im a person in their early twenties who just moved from a place an hour from sydney with heaps of people and social events (ig places to meet friends) to a place in rural mid coast nsw with the vast majority population being older/conservative people.(I had to move with my family because of my current financial situation) I have genuinely no friends here as i dont have a job and study tafe online so im feeling extremely isolated. This is especially hard as im a queer person with mental health issues and very much present that way so finding anyone like me is feeling less and less likely and making me feel more isolated and depressed. I even tried bumble friends but there wasnt anyone on their because were so rural and i also made a profile on a dating app stating I was only there for friends but i didnt get any hits whatsoever. I guess im just seeing if anyone else is in a similar situation and what they did or if anyone has any ideas about my situation? Thank you to anyone who reads this 🙂

Hey @uhilikefortnite ,

Welcome to the forums. Thank you for sharing your story and what's been going on for you. It sounds incredibly isolating.

Have you heard of QLife before? https://qlife.org.au/

Re: Struggling to make friends in rural australia

I moved to a regional town in SA and it was a very isolating experience, it was only a small town and half of them we're mentally unstable with addiction issues, another quarter were serial killer wannabes, that's how they came across and the other quarter were nice people that were hiding from everyone else, I did connect with two nice people but they had serious mental health problems with addictions and were difficult to deal with, I just think that the current economic/political system is bending everyone's mind's and a lot of people try escaping to the country because the housing is cheaper but there are limited services. Look around you'll find someone eventually and the rural setting where I lived was very peaceful and calming.

Re: Struggling to make friends in rural australia

I think rural communities can be very close knit, but it's about first connecting in order to become close knit @uhilikefortnite

Sounds good to get into some groups around where you are. Do you know where to look?

I'm wondering if the town centre info centre, library, post office will have info @uhilikefortnite ?
