Giving up on medication

Giving up on medication

As you all know medication has been throwing me around. It's made me violently ill and feeling like I'm losing my mind. My latest one I'm on makes me feel so dumb. I literally can not multi task. I can't get words out and I feel it in my head. Like I feel there is a thick wall in my head hugging my brain. It's revolting.

Im now only using that medication as a sleeping pill as it's the only thing that puts me to sleep but I'm still blurry in the head so I'm going to slowly go off it.

I was meant to start my new medication yesterday and got the script made. The pharmacist came down with pages about the medication and the boxes was covered in warning stickers. The pharmacist then looks at me with the most sadest look and starts warning me about the side effects and that I can not stop taking it as it's very dangerous. Then I was like I don't want to have zero control of my body. I don't want to take a new tablet that has the chances of making me still feel dumb and unable to be me. I don't want to have to slowly go off something and feel horrible. Then the pharmacist told me to make sure I don't crush the pills. Then I freaked out. I can not swallow tablets never have never will tried everything out of the book. I was like I have to I told my doctor I can't swallow tablets and she's like hell no the way it realises won't be good for you if you crush the tablet.

Then and there I thought no more to tablets. I want a clear head. I just want a clear head for once with out poison in it that my body is rejecting.

Is anyone on here with rapid cycling bipolar that takes no medication. And tips on how to live life just on hope?

Good evening @Former-Member

Kitkat16 here, one of the moderators.

How long have you been on the medication for? I am sorry to here you are experience such severe and distressing side effects from it. Often side effects have a life span though and may wear off over time. It may be worth speaking to your doctor/psychiatrist about this to work together to find a happy medium?

Often it can be tempting to stop medication because of the side effects however it is much safer to consult a doctor first.

Re: Giving up on medication

I've been on the latest medication for around three months. The side effects are not getting any lesser. It actually gets worse and I can't get on a high enough level to see if it even really helps me. So the plan is to slowly get me off them and on to the new ones. So basicky I'm on two fully different types of medication at the same time.

Hello @Former-Member,

It does seem like slowly going off them makes sense to see what is helping you at the moment if you are not feeling any better, I guess it would be best to just take things day by day with regards to the withdrawals you are having, and really implementing a lot of self-care right now. What things help you get through the day?

I'm just doing 10 hour shifts working and keeping busy. I'm going to slowly go off them. I ain't got time to be ill and hope I can't battle Bipolar on my own.

Dear Loulathecat,

I hear what you say about medication, and about the fact that some medications can have serious side effects.Who is prescribing your medication, a GP or a psychiatrist? Let me suggest that you need TWO psychiatrists, in other words that you should ask for a second opinion and explain all the problems you have had with medication in the past and the fact that you can't swallow tablets

It might be a good idea to write down all this information so that you can show it to the psychiatrist you see. There are hundreds of medications on the market, and there may be some which suit you. In any case you are taking a risk going off medication with bi-polar disorder. That can have terrible consequences and it is a very real risk. I'm not suggesting you start scoffing medications without question, I am just suggesting that you find out what your options are. By the way, I have bi-polar and am on medication. Best wishes,

Ellu

Re: Giving up on medication

Hi Ellu,

My doctor is prescribing my medication. I had a very bad experience with my old phycatrist. He was a lovely person who I really got along with and felt safe with but I was just not ready for it. I didn't speak to anyone including my husband for a month.

My husband and doctor are both scared about me seeing someone as they knew how badly it tipped me and my doctor and phycatrist worked with me together and my doctor knows I will just freak out.

He's plan was to try most common medication on me and if the stuff I was meant to be starting didn't work get a professional. He asked me if I wanted to see my former phycatrist if it comes to it but I declined because it just has yucky memory's.

But I just feel I need a break. I just want to be drug free. I'm just not taking to any type well and beyond scared to try something new and my mind go to space and just suck at my work and can't function.

It's like do I live with my bipolar being controlled but not being able to function or being able to function until I come to a low and hope I got the strength to get through it. But then again I'm ok if I get down and what happens as it's my choice.

Hi, I'm new here. I'm hearning sinailr stories to mine. My meds have been changed for so many years. Last year I went off them and it's been months and I'm noticing I'm starting to get manic again but only a little. So I asked for something to temporarily take the edge off. I lived over 4 months feeling good off lboth meds. I wonder if we can just sometimes live free of them for a while.

@stayingeven

It really comes down to coping strategies, how severe the mental illness is and a individuals strengths to whether one can function off meds.

I had a total mental breakdown 4 yrs ago. Have been off medication for nearly 2 years now by putting into practice what keeps me from mentally declining again. And I cope with life without them. But like everybody else I can have bad days or sometimes even weeks - I just push through and keep as active and positive as possible. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy I find.

Re: Giving up on medication

Hi, I am new here and wanted to discuss the combination of medications that I'm on. I see that guidelines mean that I can't. I don't think that I'd be the only one who felt they were prescribed too many medications yet do not see an improvement in the symptoms of their illness. I've been on too many for too long. I want to stop taking them! I want to see if I can cope without them. I'm afraid of what they're doing to my body. I feel the life in me is slipping away... I can't cope with living like this. And yes, I go to professionals but I hear the hopelessness in their voices.
