What to do when health services aren't helping

What to do when health services aren't helping

Hi all,

Coming here as I just don't know what to do anymore and retelling my story over and over is just too much atm. I got discharged from the public community mental health team due to being "recovered enough" a month ago. I was already spiralling then and this just made it worse. I've since seen my GP and NDIS funded psychologist who were both very concerned and they both referred me back to this team as high risk of suicide (I attempted) . This was Tuesday this week and I was told the manager would call me. Now it's Sunday and I'm going nuts and don't know what to do. Despite being very afraid of the service letting me down I called for help only to be told it appears my case is closed but they will reopen it and they will call me during business hours. The clinician was very condescending and said they couldn't help as that team will have to. No asking if I felt safe or would hurt myself, I'm at a loss of what to do, I wouldn't go to ED as it's still the same team that I'm now fearful of....what have others done when the public mental health team aren't helping?

@Daisy78 I'm glad it helped to know that you aren't alone. The mental health system is far from perfect that's for sure.

I was supposed to have a doctors appointment today but it was cancelled, something I really didn't need to happen.

I'm glad that your doctor has taken over your care and I really hope he can make sure that you get the help you need.

I'm really not doing ok. And other than my gp who I haven't been able to see yet i have noone to support me. I have the forums here and I'm very grateful for that cos that's all I have right now.

Stay strong and keep fighting, we are always here for you ❤️.

@Former-Member

Well that all just sucks, I understand how isolating it can be with our conditions, even when people want to help they don't quite understand how.

I'm glad you come here for support, I'm guessing you have tried other ways? I don't know what services are about in your area? I had a "recovery coach" once from a free service who was brilliant, but she was rare.

Anyways I'm sure you have tried those type of things which are very hit and miss but just thought I'd mention. It's very tough doing it alone 😔.

All here if you need us and keep on...keeping on as best you can ❤️

Re: What to do when health services aren't helping

I'm sorry to hear that many ppl have troubles concerning the public healthcare system.

I'm in that situation currently too.

I'm linked in with all available services and agencies that I am eligible to do so with.

It's what I call "being a hot potato", where all of them are passing the buck onto everyone else.

I called MH Hospital today and am waiting for a call back from my case manager to see about follow-ups, new appointments, etc.

I'm even contacting other state agencies now, to see if they know of anything I've yet to explore.

There are still not many numbers left to ring; they are helpful to vent, most direct to local, which I'm already connected to.

Agency 1 - Have you dealt with Agency 2.

Me - Yes, that's done successfully with Agency 2, they suggested I contact you.

Agency 1 - Do you know about Agency 3, 4 and 5?

Me - Yes, 3, 4 & 5 all are aware of the circumstances and I have a case manager for each of these agencies who have all sent support letters to Agency 1 & 2.

Me - I have even contacted the local MP to contact Agency 2 on my behalf.

Me - Agency 2 contacted me after 2 letters, a new Psych report and a call from MP.

They told me to wait; nothing was available.

Agency 1 - Agency 3 was told by Agency 6 if there was anything else to do.

Agency 6 told Agency 2 that everything was being done in their power on a regular basis to find a solution to the issue. Duty of Care and all that.

Me - I am very ill and declining due to Priority 1. It's taking its toll. Still, I try to keep productive. Agency 2 said they could not help even though Agency 1 suggested I contact them. I contacted them both, and each of them suggested contacting each other, as well as Agency 3, 4, 5 and 6. I said I did that already. That's not even starting with everything concerning Agency 7, 8 and 9, who I am in regular contact with and keeping them up to date with the situation.

Priority 1 cannot be confirmed reasonably within a time frame because, basically, Priority 1 does not exist. (as far as they are concerned)

Me - There are dozens of Priority 1s.

I have evidence of them.

Agency 2 - Let me explain to you like you are 5 years old - Priority 1s do not exist, because we say so, despite all evidence to the contrary, even those sources which are considered to be reputable and factual based on reason.

Me - Agency 10 thinks I am lying and/or at the very least exagerrating or otherwise outright malingering, because the truth of my experience is to ikky to fathom as being reality, even though they have no professional knowledge, qualifications or lived experience in the Area of MH. They don't understand it out of ignorance &/or unawareness and its beyond their pay grade to fill out forms for Agency 6. I know because they told me that, made comments to that conclusion and ignored the paperwork hoping it would not be followed up on by Agency 9. However it's been verified by A, B and C that it is legitimate and I was told by Agency 3 that if I was lying about my MH status, then I deserve an Academy Award.

To be continued as the rabbit hole can continue down along these lines for a few more hours, having on even broached Priority 2 - 10 yet, which cannot be attained without first solving Priority 1.

Re: What to do when health services aren't helping

I'll certainly be lobbying for changes to several bureaucratic systems, to be sure.

Once I can get settled. Everything is very Catch-22 currently.

But as it's quoted - "The squeaky wheel gets the oil."

Tomorrow will be another day of phone calls. Most days are for me at the moment.

There are lovely ppl in every place, with everyone working within their purviews.

A lot of them who are effective are usually working well below their pay grade for the immense behind the scenes work they do for others.

Burnout is inevitable and if I had a dollar for each one of my friends who have changed careers and/or locations to elevate the stress and workload, I would be a very rich woman.

Things were going well, then my MH hospital case manager left, (she told me she didn't know if her contract would be renewed, so I said my goodbyes then to her wishing the best. I miss her, she was lovely.) Then another person in that dept. did some interim work before the next new case manager arrived. I have spoken to her several times, waiting maybe tomorrow for her callback again.

Another beautiful lesbianian with a kickass bulldog vibe came into my life for one afternoon via that first case manager and informed me on a few things. She also left her rural MH job and went to WA. Due to her frustration at the broken and ineffective system. She did her job only to get constantly railroaded, just as her clients were. I cannot say I blame her for relocating to a different career. But she made an impression on me that was glorious and I would have loved her to be a part of my support network, I feel like she "could get things done" vibe is much needed for my situation. I miss her, even if I only got to know her over a few hours. I hope I get the opportunity to connect with her again.

It's a small world where anything can happen.

Ppl like that restore my faith in humanity.

I'm in pain a lot right now though.

I'm doing everything to keep myself together, as I have survived this long for reasons. So I invent more reasons to stay, in a good way.

Beautiful people are a worthy reason. ❤️

Thank you for taking your time to respond

@rav3n. I love that Edgar Allan Poe poem. Is that why your name? That's what I first think of, anyway... 🙂

I wish all the good stuff you send gets returned to you 10x. Thank you so much.

glad you had some lovely case managers to support you in the past, i hope more of those amazing people find their way to you @Meredyth49

someone else recently mentioned that my username reminds them of the Edgar Allan Poe poem too! unfortunately haven't yet read the poem but i guess this is my sign to. i like birds, crows and ravens in particular, i think they're very clever 😊

Re: What to do when health services aren't helping

@rav3n Thanks, I've been fortunate in getting genuine and caring ppl.

I think it's the nature of the job which attracts certain types of ppl.

Ppl who gravitate to wanting to help and be of service to others.

Yes, I agree those birds are clever and they remember ppl and recognise them, according to research. I always perceive them, (all birds actually) as positive when I see them. Always makes my day brighter.

I was going to post the poem itself, but forgot how long it was, so dropping a link instead for you to peruse at your leisure. 🙂

Re: What to do when health services aren't helping

agreed!! @Meredyth49

oo yes i've heard that about them too, i once watched a crow gather small bits of leftover food and dig lil holes in the dirt to hide it under (so that the other species of birds couldn't find it). hours later it came back to those spots ate it. love their intelligence!

really appreciate the link to the poem!! will definitely give it a read this week 😊

hope you have a lovely night 💜
