Yarning space

26th January: What does this day mean to you?

26th January: What does this day mean to you?

We want to make this space a place for mob to gather and share what 26th January means to them.

1) What does this day mean to you and/or your family?

2) What do you hope for this day to be?

3) Do you have any words of wisdom to share with all those here on the Yarning Space?

We recognise this topic can bring up a lot of big feels for all the members here. Please take care and look after yourselves.

Re: 26th January: What does this day mean to you?

What does this day mean to you and/or your family?

- It means a day of gathering together with other mob to reflect as opposed to celebrate like many others take the opportunity to do. It is a day of mourning. It is a day of reflection but also we can spend it looking at all great the things we bring to this country and recognise the strengths of our culture.
I do this every day with my family but as it is unfortunately a big day on the calendar its an opportunity to talk to my family and children about this day and how it is not an appropriate day to celebrate Australia Day and why that is.

2) What do you hope for this day to be?

As I said above, I don’t want this day to be a celebration.
I want this to be a day of reflection, connection to culture and each other.
Our local council have a Truth Telling event tomorrow at Sunrise, I would like to see more of that.

3) Do you have any words of wisdom to share with all those here on the Yarning Space?

Stay true to what you believe in and our culture, people will tell you all sorts of horrible things about this day and the fact that we don’t celebrate Australia Day on this date, but stick to your believes and stay true to your heart
You know what is right, don’t let people tell you otherwise. January 26 is not a day of celebration.
Remember how strong you are and how strong WE are. We are resilient, proud and strong people.
Hug your loved ones.
