TW: Women’s Safety

TW: Women’s Safety

TW: Abuse/domestic violence

Content/trigger warning
Hey everyone, so I grew up with domestic violence from my dad and then was recently groomed by a male therapist I was seeing and have been trying to come to terms with that. I’m just finding it so distressing how unsafe women are in the world.

I don’t understand why men harm women. Genuinely, I can’t see what there is to gain from harming a woman. It’s just heartbreaking that women have to constantly think about how not to get murdered. I’m so afraid of men and I wish there were more public spaces that were female-only and I wish there were more spaces that focused on teaching women to de-centre men because we live in such a patriarchal society. There is so much that puts women at a disadvantage and I feel like the more I grow up, I’m realising how unfair the world is for women. I’m just so distressed by this. I want to save all the women from the circumstances they’re in because I know so many are stuck in situations they didn’t want to be in but they can’t get out because the systems in place don’t serve them.

Hi @Alice6 ,

We are sorry to hear about your experiences.

I hope you find the support you are looking for. It sounds incredibly hard not to find the support you need.

Have you ever been referred to services to support those in similar circumstances?

@tyme Yeah I’ve reached out to them. I think I’m more frustrated about how difficult it is to prevent these things from happening because of broader social issues.

Re: TW: Women’s Safety

@Alice6 i can relate to this so much and I understand your pain. As someone that has and is going through a DV type situation, it's so hard to get help and to actually be listened to. I don't have much advice to offer as I'm struggling to navigate the system myself.

But please know that you aren't alone and that you matter. ❤️

Re: TW: Women’s Safety

@Former-Member I’m so sorry to hear you’re navigating something similar. Women deserve so much better. I hope you find some kind of support. The DV helpline is great if you need someone to talk to and there’s counselling options and recognition payments for victims of domestic violence. There’s also crisis payments from Centrelink and your employer should give you family violence leave. Hope that helps a little bit because I wish I knew about these things when I was leaving my DV situation.

Re: TW: Women’s Safety

@Alice6 unfortunately my circumstances don't qualify me for any of the payments. I don't work so I don't have to worry about that. I know there's so much more help out there now but alot of people aren't aware of it, and it's still a situation that happens way too often to women. My situation is a bit different and I've just been told it's too complicated and that nothing can be done. I've all but given up trying to get help but every now and then I push myself to report it in the hopes that just maybe I'll get someone that actually acts on it.

Take care of yourself.

Re: TW: Women’s Safety

Hi 👋🏼 @Alice6. I’m Glisten. I don’t think we have met.

You are 💯 % correct. Women have been Second Class citizens for a very long time.

Social bigotry permeates through every aspect of a woman’s life.

It’s worse when women don’t stand in solidarity with each other for basic human rights and freedoms.

Domestic violence support agencies have criteria. It is my experience that unless I have a child or children at risk, I don’t meet the criteria for the agency’s support. Therefore my value as a person, is dependant on whether my uterus has been occupied.

Perimenopause and menopause increased increase the risk of suicide. The rate for this age group being reported as10.4 deaths per 100,000 people.

I encourage everyone to write to their local Member of Parliament and share their experiences and what needs to change.

For those that came before us and our granddaughters.

🌱💞
