Ex-Wife and Mother - Ongoing Mental Health Issues - Is there anyway to get support
Hi, My ex-wife has been experiencing mental health issues for a number of years.
Between us, we have 3 adult children (25, 22, 20) and my ex-wife does not communicate with any of us.
However, I know that she has been stood down at work on No-Pay again due to mental health issues. (I know this because after 5 years of divorce, I am still Next of Kin at her work). Her work called me on Monday to see if I had any contact with her. At this point her security card is disabled, but she still entered the office last friday, which is a breach of her employment contract, so she is looking at disciplinary action and is stood down to her next fit for work assessment on 28th February.
She has had multiple welfare checks by police over the last 3 years, the last one called in by her neighbours around 2nd week of December 2024.
Each time, she seems to pass the welfare check as she can seem quite coherent when the police visit.
The issue we have is that it seems that unless she harms herself or someone else, no action can be taken if she refuses mental health support herself as an adult.
Since she is close to losing her job, myself and the kids feel stuck in limbo as we can't help her directly (she won't communicate), nor will Community Mental Health services do any sort of evaluation unless the police have done a welfare check and assessed she needs help (but she passes welfare checks).
She has been stood down at work before, and my daughter gave her $2000 to keep mortgage payments up. She will be in the situation very soon again I would suspect.
I am interested in finding out how we could get further support, and if nothing else prepare for the worst if she does indeed lose her means of income and will be seeking support from our children. What sort of support services can myself and more importantly my kids access to try to further navigate this?
She has suffered from extreme paranoia and psychotic
episodes and 3 years ago we did work with Mental Health HelpLine, who put us in touch with Community Mental Health Services to get her assessed when she went to the hospital. She had to go to hospital of her own accord, which she did which is essentially for a rape kit as she was convinced she was being raped in the night. We coordinated with the hospital and they did a psychological assessment and kept her in the mental health facility for 3 weeks over Xmas (2021).
She has been stood down from work (she works in government) 3 times since then, and I suspect (but no facts) that she is taking anti-psychotic medicine and then feeling better and stop taking them again.
We just feel that we are just waiting for the inevitable to happen, where she loses her job etc, as there is no way to intervene or get support until someone is in danger.
