Feel like I've reached that point

Feel like I've reached that point

Since the end of October last year I have felt like I have been walking along the edge of a cliff. There have been constant knocks but I have clawed myself back up to that cliff edge. But today I had a knock that I don't know if I can recover from. I feel so alone.

At the end of October last year my girls, 6 and 3, came home after spending a week on holiday with my ex and his girlfriend. Before they left both my ex and his girlfriend agreed to keep their public displays of affection to hand holding only and as my girls sleep in the same bed as my ex that she doesn't sleep with them. They didn't honor that agreement. My ex and I had an argument the day they got back. That argument got physically violent. Over the next few days my girls disclosed things to me that, after seeking advise, caused me to refuse him any further in person contact, although I did still allow phone contact. After another month I started monitoring that phone contact as he had started making threats aimed at me to miss 6. The mediation process was started but I had been advised that nothing would happen until the new year.

4 days before Christmas I got 24 hours notice that I was to be in court for a hearing regarding custody of the girls. His claim was that due to my "mental instability" the girls were at risk of harm. My legal representative that day was a community lawyer who admitted that she was in way over her head. I felt I had no choice but to agree to letting him have over night visits with them again. I was also no longer allowed to monitor the nightly phone calls.

Over the Christmas/New Year break I spent all of my spare time, and a lot of other time going over all aspects of what had been an emotionally abusive relationship so that my lawyer could prepare my responding documents for the court. It was one of the most heart wrenching things to do. To have all of that pain put in writing, to have to share all of that pain with not only my lawyer, but my family as well. To know that he and his lawyer are picking over that pain to find ways to hurt me further.

Yesterday was the second court date. He agreed to most of the orders that I asked for. These were not what I wanted but I had already been told that without actual physical proof of abuse I would not be able to keep the girls away from him. But there were some things that I again felt I had no choice but to agree to. The one that I am most angry about is I had to agree to be compliant with all treatment regarding my mental health. This does not effect me in any way as I have always been compliant, it makes me angry because he knows that, because if my illness was physical I would not have been made to agree to anything like it. On top of that he is forcing me to sell my house with the proceeds to be held in trust until all proceedings are finalised. That could be more than 2 years. In the mean time the girls and myself will have to move into my parents spare room. I have been watching him live the high life while I am struggling to even buy food, yet he refuses to pay child support.

Today I went to see my doctor as I had been having pain in my mouth for a few weeks. He told me that the first thing to look at is that it's an infection that should resolve itself in a couple of weeks. But if it doesn't then I will need to have a biopsy. I have watched so many friends and family die of cancer that I can't get it out of my head.

I feel like I've fallen off that cliff and there is nowhere to go but into the abyss.

Hello Loveable

Just because one person did not does not mean you need to accept yourself as unloveable.

Separation when there are children involved is one of the most traumatic experiences to navigate. There are a few people in the forum who have experienced that. Some have repartnered some have not. Look forwards to the medium and long term. Keep imagining how you want to be with your girls in the next few years. Take each step one day at a time and do what needs to be done. You may feel that you will never come through .. but you can .. .

Keep reaching out....

Be gentle with yourself and your heart.

Re: Feel like I've reached that point

Hello @Unloveable,

Wow thank you for sharing all of that, I can only imagine how hard things are for you of late and especially at the moment. You mentioned feeling like walking along a cliff edge, that really highlighted to me that you are feeling constantly in fear, which I am assuming is overwhelming and exhausting to feel that way all of the time.

The seperation process with children involved, like @Appleblossom said is one of the hardest things a person can go through, I am sorry that things have become this way and now you are forced to move into your parents spare room. Perhaps by living with them you can receive some extra support with the kids and for yourself through them?

Also what other support are you getting to help manage how you cope with all of this? It's important to reach out like you are on here, to counsellors and psychologists, friends and family to help make you feel less alone in all of this.

Custody, child support and mediation takes such a long time and is extremely stressful. What kinds of things are you able to maintain with your self-care at the moment. Are you eating/sleeping/exercising at all? Anything that you can do to help take your mind off things and relieve that feeling of anxiety to feel more calm would also be really helpful during this long process.

I hope your mouth gets better and it's just an infection, try to not worry about that until you need to when you get results back as that will also add to the stress and is possibly not helpful to think of the worse case scenario right now, we are here for you ❤️

Hi @Unloveable

I am in a similar situation regarding being forced to accept orders, have my mental health be put on the orders etc... and struggling with it greatly. despite there never having been any child protection concerns ever regarding my care of the children etc and always having sought help/treatment myself.. its crushing.

I hope that your medical issue clears up,

remember your kids need you so much more because of the father that they have,

Re: Feel like I've reached that point

@Unloveable. So much going on in your life atthe mmoment. No wonder it feels like you are being pushed over the cliff.
Your children are young. My best friend monitors her dtrs ph calls with her dad - because he makes such revolting remarks. She puts the ph on speaker - so that she can monitor the call. And at their age - I think that's fair enough. As my friend says - her dtr is only 5 - she is too young for private ph calls & there should be so secrets.
Keep clawing back up that cliff as many times as you have to. Your girls need you. You keep fighting and doing what you can - to live the best life possible for you and your girls. He will throw things at you - but you are far stronger than him. You have been living with MI & you are raising your girls. That shows strength. Ignore his attempts to trip you up.
Next mediation - make it a condition - on paper - that he must pay child support - thru the child support agency. Even though this will delay your first payment - at least then - they will be the ones monitoring him and chasing him.
Then - let your parents help you with the girls. It may be a tight fit - but the girls will be happy to simply be with you. They don't need fancy at their age. Simply love, your time and games.
Please make sure you have a psychologist or therapist to debrief with regularly. This will help you a lot. You need to take care of you - so then you can take care of your girls.
I wish you well
