Being Alone Intentionally

Being Alone Intentionally

Hi everyone,

I am very recently diagnosed with BPD/CPTSD/ Depression/Anxiety and struggle with friendships and wanting to be around others who I have to have conversations with.

I don't mind sitting within a busy cafe alone or being in a location where there are people around, as long as I don't know anyone and therefore I don't have to chat / socialise with anyone.

I would like to know if others panic/stress out if you have to meet up with others and be part of a group? How do you manage the stress/ anxiety / feeling like you would rather be alone than with anyone else?

Do you try and explain to others what you are thinking and feeling and why? Or do you just make excuses not to turn up?

I struggle with trusting people and feeling like I can confide in them and or be honest about why I would rather not attend any events / gatherings etc.

I am aware of the stigma associated with BPD and I just don't know how to navigate it. Any tips/ experiences/ suggestions welcome.

Thanks 🙂

Hi ,

I experience anxiety in meeting people too sometimes

But I don’t tend to want to be alone intentionally I find it very isolating on my own

So it’s a bit different

Do you feel okay on your own and not isolated and lonely?

Or is it that you would prefer to be able to trust people but find it hard?

Hey @Fredd50 @UnpredictableMe ,

Welcome to the forums. Thank you for sharing a little about yourselves.

@UnpredictableMe , I was very 'excited' to read your post because I haven't found many people who can relate to this situation - but I can!

Like you, I LIKE to be alone - intentionally.

I prefer to go out by myself, or go and have a coffee myself.

When I finish work, it's like 'Phew!' I can be by myself now!

Do I feel lonely? Nope!

Do I feel isolated? Nope!

I totally get what you mean @UnpredictableMe . I look forward to connecting with you more to hear more about what you experience as someone with BPD (oh, I haven't mentioned, I have BPD).

@Fredd50 , I also hear what you are saying. You are not alone in feeling that you feel isolated at times. Do you have people you can talk to as a way to feel more connected with people?

I’m heartened to hear you guys enjoy being alone

I often feel awkward in social settings and run back to being alone

so I’m kind of caught in a vice grip

On the one hand I run back to being alone when people reach out to me or I reach out to them

on the other hand I feel lonely on my own

I think it’s something I have to address by finding things to do when I’m alone that I find enjoyment in

do you guys have activities you like doing on your own that keep you occupied and happy alone?

Re: Being Alone Intentionally

Hey @Fredd50 ,

When I'm alone, I like going for walks, browsing my phone, reading, sleeping, catching up with text messages, going to buy the things I need...

I guess for me, I don't have much time alone and maybe that's why I treasure it so much. I just like being quiet, not have to wait for people, not having people wait for me, not being obliged to talk to people....

So I can't say I'm doing grand activities on my own.

I have to say though, in the past, I've been surrounded by people but still felt lonely. I just feel a lot more comfortable alone - or with kids.
