Advice for a carer for someone with major depression

Advice for a carer for someone with major depression

Hello all,

I am a carer of my partner who is struggling with major depression, and suicidal thoughts. I am struggling to find ways in which I can support them. They do not like to talk about their struggles as it makes them feel so much worse, so we don't. I have only supported people with depression by talking so having someone who doesn't like to do that has limited my ability to help and I don't know of any other ways.

Currently I'm just doing basic household chores to make their life a little easier but I can't help but think they are just still struggling all alone and I'm not being supportive. When it gets bad I cant do anything as they don't know what they need or want so we just sit there and wait for it to feel a little better. It feels awful knowing that when I am in need of support whatever they do helps so much and it makes me feel better almost instantly, and I cannot give that back to them when they need it.

Any suggestions on ways to support someone with depression?

Hi @tyme,
I'm doing okay, I've been thinking a lot about everything everyone has said here, I have also started an online program support for carers to understand how to address and help support someone with depression, and how to look after yourself as a carer.
Today I have just been doing my own thing, watching some comfort shows and having some me time to relieve any stress I have.
other then that, I'm taking on board what @UnpredictableMe said just taking day by day.

I appreciate the check in, and hope you are doing well.
Thankyou for your kindness

Kudos to you for reaching out @MavenX .

It takes a lot to reach out in the first place. I hope you find what works and yes, taking it day by day is certainly a way good strategy.. and when things get really tough, it might be hour by hour.

I look forward to hearing how things go for you!
