Employment for older carers

Employment for older carers

Hi I'm mum to a 17yo with Level 2 ASD. My son has just graduated from school. He's a little lost in his life. I don't blame him. We're waiting for his NDIS funding application to come through - the NDIA assured me a decision is imminent, he will receive help soon and I should just keep pestering them. He refuses to work because of his severe anxiety. On top of my son's struggles, he is at that age where he won't listen to me or anything I try to help him with. I will never give up. I love him unconditionally and have decided to just let him be...just concentrate on me. I am having trouble finding work, having been out of the workforce for over a decade - no one wants to hire me. I have been trying to find work for the last 2 years - I even got fired because of my home life with my children. I am qualified in disability but I'm really tired and more disability work is the last thing I need, when I have issues coming out of my ears at home. I have health problems and am getting older. I have an idea of what I would like to do but can't find part time work. Is there anywhere I can go please to get employment help? TIA

Hey @MamaClare ,

Welcome to the forums!

Great to see you and thank you for opening up and sharing what's been going on for you.

I hear the challenges you are experiencing at the moment. I hope the NDIS support will come through for your son soon.

In the meantime, I hear you feel you want to re-enter the workplace, and you are qualified in disability.

Work in disability can be so broad. It can be from working intensively 1:1 with someone to taking someone out for a cuppa. So you are not interested in any part?

Another thing, with your experience with your son, coupled with your work in disability, would a job in peer work as a carer be of interest to you?

Re: Employment for older carers

Hi Tyme. Thanks for your reply. I have been doing support work 1:1 with a variety of clients, taking them out for a cuppa and helping them with their NDIS plans. That work is very rewarding. I'm just going thru a hard time with my son and am consumed atm with supporting someone. I just want a break sometimes, that's all. A new career just for me. I have also lost a parenting payment from Centrelink because my son has finished school. So I need to boost my income a little. I have thought about peer work but atm I just want a complete break. Carer burnout I think they call it. Time to recharge my batteries.

Re: Employment for older carers

Since your son has finished school, do you need a job you can do from home @MamaClare ? Or are you able to get out there.

Any plans for your son? I know you mentioned his anxiety, but will he be studying or have work at a supported work place?

Oh, and while you've lost parenting payment, can your son get an allowance? @MamaClare

Hey @tyme. It would be great if I could find work at home, I have health probs. But I'm so sick of scammers. I haven't any luck finding a job from home which is legit. I am able to get out, so I think that's the key. Ive finished my career. I just want something fun with little responsibility. My son will get help job hunting through NDIS. He's unable to do it on his own and won't talk to employers.

Hey @MamaClare ,

Do you have hobbies you can start a little business with? Nothing to grand... but just engaging in a hobby you enjoy?

For example, at one stage, I was making wedding invitations and cards, and also creating design work on the computer.

What hobbies do you have?
