supporting an alcoholic family member

supporting an alcoholic family member

My husband and I are trying to support our alcoholic son who has finally ( after over 10 years!) realised he cannot manage his alcohol use by himself and is telling people he will go to rehab. He has a phone intake appointment this week for the rehab place. Its been really difficult as we are trying to keep him to having a unit every 2 hours. My husband had to go to work today so gave him a drink before leaving and then within half an hour my son was wanting another one! I pleaded with him not to walk to the bottle shop and he relented and finally went to his bed and managed to stay there until the 2 hours was up. I cry sometimes when I'm with him because I'm about sad who he has become but am also thankful for the beautifully kind person he is and that he now tells me he wants to learn to enjoy life without alcohol.

@Ru-bee
The phone intake went really well. The guy was very patient and our son very honest.

up-date:

My son got into detox and rehab and was going well UNTIL he decided he'd give his excess tablets to another participant, so was kicked out of rehab. He and we were very disappointed and he tried to get into other rehabs but nothing was available of course. However, his ex's mother has said he can only see his children if he has not been drinking , so he has been sober/dry for 6 days now. He has never done that before he tells us. I am no longer walking on egg-shells and we are taking one day at a time. He is allowed back in rehab in 3 months time, but he is now not sure about that as he is interested in another girl... So the saga continues. @Ru-bee

It sounds like it's been turbulent, but that overall there has been some progress made @MorningStar1

How are you and your husband feeling about it? I know it was really weighing on you when you first posted, as is very understandable

thanx @Ru-bee! We are feeling thankful and calmer now that he has been sober the last several days and the (reward) visit from his children is going well. My husband mentioned he was feeling more anxious and said it was because each day was unpredictable with our son. I have also been feeling more anxious in my body, but we are not feeling overwhelmed. He has said our son cannot live here if he goes back to the bottle ad will have to go to rehab. But it usually takes weeks to get into rehab. I said I would not want my son here if he takes us the drink again, but will abide by what my hubby decides. So we have mixed feelings.
